Woman Killed by Man Plunging From Building

On July 19, 2026, Houra Inaba was killed when Shinsei Taguchi crashed into her after falling from a 12-story apartment building in Nagoya, Japan. In a grim irony, Taguchi survived the impact that proved fatal to the woman below.

Taguchi, 29, plummeted from the structure and struck 23-year-old Inaba around 1 a.m. as she walked along the sidewalk with a companion. The force of the collision left Inaba with hemorrhagic shock, and she was declared dead at approximately 5:30 a.m. after both were transported to a medical facility. Taguchi remains in critical condition and has not regained consciousness.

A woman who had been walking alongside Inaba contacted emergency services, reporting that someone had dropped from a building and hurt her friend. Responders arrived within minutes, and the area was sealed off as officers began their inquiry.

Questions Investigators Have Not Yet Answered

Key details remain unclear in the Nagoya case. The Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters has not established whether Taguchi jumped intentionally or lost his balance accidentally. Authorities have also not identified which section of the structure he fell from, leaving the sequence of events largely unknown even days after the incident.

The location itself is well documented. The apartment building stands in a dense commercial zone approximately half a kilometer northeast of Yabacho Station, a stop on the Meijo Line of Nagoya’s municipal subway system, near the downtown loop of the Nagoya Expressway. Kyodo News described the area as “a busy area” filled with stores and entertainment facilities. The neighborhood is crowded with office and apartment buildings, active well after midnight.

Inaba, by all accounts, was simply walking when the collision occurred. There would have been no advance notice for someone on the pavement below.

A Pattern Japan Has Seen Before

While shocking, this tragedy follows a pattern of similar deaths in Japan. A teenage female student, age 17, leapt from the twelfth-story observation area of NEWoMan Yokohama, a shopping center next to JR Yokohama Station, in September 2024. The teen had come from Kimitsu City in Chiba Prefecture. Her fall killed a 32-year-old company employee from Midori Ward, Yokohama, who had been on the street with friends. The girl died roughly an hour later; the pedestrian died shortly after impact.

Another incident took place in Osaka in October 2020 involving a male high school student, age 17, who jumped from a commercial complex and landed on a 19-year-old female university student walking below. Both sustained fatal injuries.

Each case shares disturbing parallels: strangers struck and killed by falling bodies in busy districts, victims who had no time to react and no connection to the person above.

What Comes Next in the Investigation

Progress in the inquiry may depend on Taguchi’s medical status. Since he has not regained consciousness, investigators face difficulties reconstructing his intent or determining precisely what occurred before he fell. Police have not provided a timeframe for reaching conclusions.

Establishing whether the fall was deliberate or accidental carries implications both for legal proceedings and for how the death will be classified. In the Yokohama and Osaka cases, authorities identified both individuals who fell as having jumped. Whether that determination applies in Nagoya has not been confirmed, and officials have avoided premature characterization.

As of the most recent statements from authorities, the site remains under investigation, the cause of the fall unexplained, and the case unresolved. Police have not disclosed when they expect to determine how or why Taguchi came to plummet from the building.
