King Charles Took Surprising Precaution With Harry

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle traveled with their two children to meet King Charles at Highgrove House on July 10, the 77-year-old monarch made certain he would not be alone. Queen Camilla sat beside her husband throughout the reunion, and according to royal biographer Robert Jobson, that decision was deliberate. Charles, who continues to live with cancer, wanted a witness present for a conversation weighed down by years of rift and very public accusations.

The author of “The Windsor Legacy” explained that the queen attended “to make sure that everything was witnessed.” Jobson said the arrangement was meant to guard against any conflicting narrative that might surface publicly afterward.

A Pattern Set by the Late Monarch

Charles adopted a tactic once used by his own mother. Queen Elizabeth II reportedly would not accept telephone calls from Harry unless someone else was listening, and she refused to allow Harry and Markle to bring their own photographer to a private meeting. Harry and Markle had wanted to document the moment when the late queen met Princess Lilibet, now five, who was named after her.

The decision to keep Camilla in the room reflects concern rooted in experience. Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, the 41-year-old prince and his wife have aired grievances against the royal household in their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, in the 2022 Netflix documentary series “Harry & Meghan,” and in Harry’s 2023 memoir “Spare.” Jobson suggested Charles wanted to see his son’s family again but believed precautions were warranted.

No images or official statements about the Highgrove gathering were issued, and it was treated as an entirely private family occasion. The only people who understand what transpired, Jobson noted, “were inside the room.” It remains to be seen whether Harry and Markle will maintain that privacy.

Rare Access to Grandchildren

Charles and Camilla have had minimal contact with Prince Archie, now seven, and Lilibet. The king attended Archie’s christening at Windsor Castle on July 6, 2019. The July 10 meeting marked the first time he had seen his grandchildren since they visited for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022, four years prior. Harry and Markle returned to Britain that autumn for the queen’s funeral in September 2022.

Despite concerns over security, Harry brought his wife and children from their holiday residence in Portugal for the long-awaited visit. While in the U.K., he stopped at Birmingham Children’s Hospital to see patients and participated in wheelchair rugby at the “One Year to Go” event for the Birmingham Invictus Games 2027.

The Queen Consort’s Strategic Presence

Harry has been openly critical of Camilla. In “Spare,” he revealed that he and Prince William both pleaded with their father not to marry her, and he accused her of having “sacrificed me on her personal PR altar” by leaking stories to the press to rehabilitate her image as she prepared to become queen consort. During the July 21 episode of The Royalist podcast, Jobson maintained that Charles was wise to ensure Camilla participated in the meeting.

He described her as a devoted spouse and experienced royal who has endured years of harsh criticism from Harry, including being portrayed as a wicked stepmother. Jobson said she was more than capable of handling such a tense encounter and that her involvement kept Charles from becoming overly accommodating, particularly amid rumors that the Sussexes hope to reestablish ties with the royal family and make more frequent trips to Britain.

Tensions Leading Up to the Visit

The reunion followed a difficult week for Harry in Britain. He was refused lodging at Buckingham Palace after losing his legal case against Associated Newspapers. Harry had publicly stated that his invitation to stay there was withdrawn; palace sources responded that he had initially turned down the offer before changing his mind too late for the necessary preparations to be completed.

Days after the Highgrove meeting, Harry offered a brief update on his father’s health. Attendees at a Time 100 event on July 16 reported hearing him say that Charles is doing well. Buckingham Palace disclosed the king’s cancer diagnosis in 2024, and in December 2025 Charles stated that his treatment regimen would be scaled back in 2026, attributing the progress to early detection and successful medical care.

What was discussed at Highgrove has not been disclosed. But by ensuring Camilla was present, the king seems intent on making sure that if any account of the meeting eventually goes public, it will not be shaped by the Sussexes alone.
