Comedian, actor and writer Reggie McFadden has died at 57, and his sister said the family does not know how or when he died.
Bernice McFadden, an acclaimed bestselling novelist and creative-writing professor, told the Los Angeles Times that her brother was estranged from the family and that they last saw him in 2007.
“Our mother is taking it particularly hard, as are his children and other siblings,” she told the newspaper. “Reggie was estranged from the family. The last time we saw him was in 2007. We were aware that he was living in Tanzania but knew very little about his life there.”
Reports of his death began spreading Oct. 4, 2026. His sister confirmed the death after the family was contacted by the United States State Department, and she confirmed it to The Hollywood Reporter on Oct. 4.
Cause of Death Unclear
Tanzania, the East African country where McFadden had reportedly made his home for about 18 years, is where he died. The State Department passed that news to the family, according to his sister, though relatives still do not know exactly when he died or what caused his death.
Neither a funeral home, a medical authority nor a family representative has put out an exact date of death or a medical cause, leaving the circumstances unclear. As of Oct. 5, the Los Angeles Times reported that the family “is awaiting details about his” death, and Bernice McFadden said she did not know how or when he died. The cause remains undetermined.
From Brooklyn to Network TV
Born Nov. 30, 1968, McFadden spent his childhood in Brooklyn, N.Y. Comedy became his route toward a different life, and New York’s comedy scene was where he honed his material.
His profile widened in 1991 with an appearance on HBO’s influential stand-up showcase “Def Comedy Jam.” Numerous comedians used the program as a launching pad, and it put McFadden in front of viewers across the country.
The Fox sketch series “In Living Color” brought McFadden aboard for its fifth and final season during the 1993-94 television season, where he appeared in numerous sketches as part of the ensemble. Performers including Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, David Alan Grier and the Wayans family saw their careers launched and elevated by the series.
His television credits also included “Martin,” “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” “Coach,” “Moesha,” “Getting Personal” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” where he played a police officer. In film, he appeared in comedian Adam Sandler’s 2000 comedy “Little Nicky” and in “Jacob’s Ladder.”
Stand-up remained central to his professional identity. He performed on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” and “Last Call with Carson Daly,” recorded a “Comedy Central Presents” special and worked regularly in Las Vegas.
A Second Career in Tanzania
Later in life, McFadden relocated to Tanzania, spending roughly 18 years building a career away from American television. He founded Olduvai Records, based in Tanzania, described as a gold-mining and entertainment production business, with a website that lists a distribution relationship with Sony Music’s The Orchard.
Music projects followed from the label, which reportedly established international distribution relationships as well. Olduvai Records put out the compilation “ENJOY, Vol. 1” in May 2025, a collection blending rap, R&B and Afro-influenced music. His own music also reached listeners, McFadden having released material that included work associated with the label.
Tributes and Survivors
News of his death prompted tributes from fellow comedians and fans. They remembered him as part of a generation of performers who helped shape Black comedy on American television during the 1990s. Comedian Tony Luewellyn described him as a veteran member of the comedy community, while comedian Guy Torry honored him as a talented writer and comedian.
Hampton University film studies director Prof. Rel Dowdell said in a statement, “Reggie McFadden was a very talented, veteran comedian and actor whose diverse choices and dedication to his profession were highly evident.”
His mother, Vivian McFadden, survives him, as do his two sons, Jaron and Myles, his sisters, Bernice and Misty, and his brother, Kris. Further details about his death have not been released by the family.
