White House Explodes Over Trump Funeral Nap

President Donald Trump’s appearance at Sen. Lindsey Graham’s memorial service on July 28, 2026, has triggered fierce pushback from administration officials after footage suggested the 80-year-old leader fell asleep during the ceremony at Washington National Cathedral. A White House spokesman dismissed critics as “depraved morons” while insisting Trump “was reflecting on the loss of his dear friend.”

The South Carolina Republican received a eulogy from Trump, who called him “a force to be reckoned with.” But what came after the tribute speech became the focus of online attention — video clips showing Trump’s eyelids appearing to droop as the service continued.

Seated next to the president during the Tuesday memorial were JD Vance, the vice president, along with Scott Bessent, who serves as Treasury Secretary, and Eric Trump, according to an Associated Press photograph taken inside the cathedral. The administration’s response came swiftly through spokesman Davis Ingle, who told HuffPost that anyone believing Trump dozed off “is a depraved moron.”

Viral Footage Sparks Debate

Social media users quickly circulated the cathedral footage. The account @HQNewsNow posted that Trump looked “completely passed out asleep” during Graham’s funeral. User Aaron Rupar shared video describing the president’s face as “drooping heavily” while he struggled to stay awake.

This wasn’t an isolated controversy for the administration. Trump seemed to fall asleep last month at an Oval Office gathering advocating that church and state should not be separate. The May maternal health event in the Oval Office produced similar scenes, which officials dismissed by saying he was simply “blinking.”

In February, cameras captured what appeared to be Trump nodding off at the inaugural Board of Peace meeting in the nation’s capital. On June 4, while Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks about the “Trump Promenade” — a proposed walkway extending from the Lincoln Memorial’s rear to the Potomac River — Trump seemed to slump in his chair and drift away.

Administration Fires Back at Critics

After a clip circulated from Kamala Harris’ news account, the administration’s official Rapid Response team countered on X, insisting his eyes stayed “literally open in the clip you posted.” A report published June 5, 2026, observed that Trump’s visible aging had grown increasingly hard to dismiss, despite claims from officials like Secretary of State Marco Rubio that they never witness him sleeping.

The Graham funeral came just days after Friday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Waldorf Astoria ballroom, where Trump was seen repeatedly closing his eyes for long periods as speakers addressed the audience. The scaled-back gathering drew 700 attendees to the venue that previously operated as Trump International Hotel, replacing the Washington Hilton’s decades-long run as host.

Rescheduled Event After Security Breach

The July dinner served as a replacement after Cole Tomas Allen, age 31, broke through a security checkpoint on April 25 and opened fire near the ballroom entrance. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and approximately 2,600 guests sheltered during the shooting. Melania Trump, captured on video appearing terrified during April’s violence, declined to attend the rescheduled event. The vice president, who had recently become a father for the fourth time, and the Secretary of State, who had just returned from a Southeast Asian tour, were also absent.

Trump faced roasting through video segments mocking his record on press freedom and coverage of a lewd letter he allegedly mailed to child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Despite the ribbing, he declared “the show must go on” and suggested the event might bear his name in future years, claiming David Ellison, whose Paramount Skydance owns CBS, told him the next dinner would carry his name.

His own speech revived previous attacks on CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, calling her “a young attractive woman” who “never smiles” and likening her appearance to transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. He also needled Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about beef tenderloin and joked about avoiding wrestling matches with Communications Director Steven Cheung.

The White House continues to maintain its aggressive stance: Trump remained conscious throughout Graham’s service, and anyone questioning that account deserves scorn.
