Clooney Hardly Standing After Wife’s Birthday Surprise Prank

George Clooney, who celebrated his 65th birthday earlier this month, says he’s “still standing” but only “barely” after his wife Amal orchestrated an elaborate surprise celebration that he joked could have been the end of him.

The Oscar winner revealed the details while speaking to British Vogue at the King’s Trust 50th Anniversary Celebration at Royal Albert Hall in London on May 11, 2026, where he and Amal also met with King Charles.

“It’s a dangerous thing to surprise someone when they turn 65 because you could drop,” George quipped at the event. “That could be the end of you.”

A Birthday Plot Months in the Making

Amal, 48, told the magazine she organized “a number of things” to commemorate the milestone. The most elaborate involved recruiting George’s friends to pose as waiters during a meal, blending in seamlessly with the actual staff before springing the surprise.

“Yeah, she had friends of mine show up posing,” George said, with Amal adding that they were “posing as waiters.” The location of the dinner wasn’t revealed, though the Clooneys were spotted having lunch with friends in St. Tropez on Thursday, May 8, two days after his birthday.

Life on the Farm in Provence

The couple, who married in September 2014, welcomed twins Ella and Alexander in June 2017. Much of their family life centers on a farm in Provence, France, though they also own property in Italy.

“You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it,” George told Esquire last year. “But now, for them, it’s like — they’re not on their iPads, you know?” The children, he noted, “have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”

George, originally from Lexington, Kentucky, explained he had concerns about “raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood,” worried they’d “never going to get a fair shake at life.” France doesn’t fixate on celebrity the way Los Angeles does, he said, making it a better environment for his family.

Parenting Advice, Clooney Style

During the conversation at the King’s Trust event, the couple was asked what advice they’d offer their eight-year-old twins. George went for comedy.

“Don’t mix grain and grape,” he said, referencing the old adage about not combining beer and wine. “I think that’s important for the children to know. Don’t mix the two.”

Amal, a human rights attorney, offered a more serious response. She said she hopes the twins “stay curious, ask lots of questions, and challenge the things that don’t make sense to them, like much of what’s going on in the world.”

George acknowledged the contrast between their responses: “My wife gives the elegant answer and I give the important answer.” Amal’s playful reply? “…And ask your dad when it comes to drink.”

Slowing Down on the Big Screen

George’s commitment to family has also shaped his approach to acting. In an interview published in December, the “Ocean’s Eleven” actor said he’s stepped back from the blockbuster roles that once dominated his filmography.

“I’m not going to be doing a whole lot of major studio kinds of films,” he said. “The films that I’m going to be working on for the most part are going to be smaller. If I’m going to go off and do something and be away from my kids, there has to be a real creative reason for it.”

His diverse body of work — spanning everything from “Michael Clayton” to “Burn After Reading” to “Intolerable Cruelty” — has allowed him to transition gracefully beyond traditional leading-man status. “It meant that once I couldn’t kiss the girl anymore, I could still have a career,” he said.

For now, the 65-year-old continues to recover from his milestone week, his friends’ disguises revealed and the evening’s celebrations behind him. George Clooney, against all odds, remains “still standing.”
