Brandon Clarke, the 29-year-old Memphis Grizzlies forward who spent his entire seven-year NBA career with the franchise, was found dead at a residence in the San Fernando Valley on Monday, May 11, 2026. Authorities are treating the death as a possible overdose as they continue their investigation.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a medical emergency shortly after 5 p.m. Monday. Paramedics pronounced Clarke dead upon arrival. Drug paraphernalia was discovered inside the residence, prompting investigators to suspect an overdose pending further examination.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner listed the cause of death as “deferred” — a classification indicating toxicology analysis and additional testing are necessary before an official determination can be made. Clarke’s body has been released to his family. On May 12, Priority Sports and the Grizzlies confirmed the news, stunning the basketball community.

Recent Legal Incident Drew Concern

Clarke’s death follows a recent legal incident that had raised alarm among those close to him. On April 1, he was arrested in Cross County, Arkansas, during a traffic stop where officers found kratom. Clarke faced multiple charges, including felony trafficking of a controlled substance and felony fleeing in a vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit, along with three misdemeanors: possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance, improper passing, and speeding more than 15 mph over the limit.

Clarke had been scheduled to appear in court on May 15, but the case cannot proceed following his death. Investigators have not indicated whether the April 1 arrest is connected to the circumstances of his death on May 11. Toxicology results are expected to take several weeks.

Seven Seasons With Memphis

Drafted by Oklahoma City and traded to Memphis in 2019, Clarke never played for another franchise. The high-flying forward became a fan favorite in Tennessee for his interior presence and athleticism. He earned All-Rookie First Team honors in 2020 after an impressive debut showcasing his polished scoring around the basket and instinctive defensive play.

Over 309 career games, Clarke averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds while posting some of the NBA’s most efficient shooting percentages during his prime seasons. Though never the marquee name on a roster featuring star guards and emerging talent, Clarke was credited as a key locker room presence whose hustle plays, screens, and tip-ins often changed game momentum. His versatility across multiple frontcourt positions and ability to excel without needing the ball made him ideal for Memphis’ fast-paced system.

Physical setbacks had limited Clarke recently. This past season, he appeared in only two games in December 2025 before a series of injuries sidelined him for most of the year. Teammates had expressed hope about his recovery, and Clarke had spoken publicly about his eagerness to return to full strength during the offseason.

Tributes Pour in From NBA Community

The Grizzlies issued an emotional statement following his death. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke. Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the team said.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also mourned the loss. “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke,” Silver said. “As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.”

Players, coaches, and team officials across the league reacted with grief and disbelief on May 12. Clarke, who had recently turned 29, was considered to be in the prime of his career with potentially several productive years ahead once he recovered from injury.

Those who knew Clarke remembered him as soft-spoken and generous with his time, deeply committed to community work in Memphis. The Grizzlies emphasized his personal qualities in their statement, noting the organization had lost both a player and someone who shaped its culture.

The team has not announced memorial plans, though league sources indicate Memphis will likely honor Clarke at the start of next season. Fans and teammates now grapple with the sudden loss of a player whose quiet but relentless career left a permanent mark on Grizzlies history.
