Trump’s Military Draft Announcement Shocks the Nation

The administration under Trump intends to implement automatic military draft registration for all male citizens aged 18 by the end of December, representing a major departure from the longstanding practice of voluntary self-registration. This policy shift presents a striking irony: President Donald Trump himself secured five draft deferments during the Vietnam War, including a medical exemption for bone spurs.

The automatic registration plan was submitted by the Selective Service System to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30, enacting a mandate that Congress authorized in December as part of last year’s National Defense Authorization Act. This bipartisan legislation shifts registration duties from individual men to federal authorities by leveraging existing government databases, such as those maintained by Social Security and the Census Bureau.

Recent events have amplified discussions about military readiness. This registration proposal came approximately one month following the commencement of hostilities between the United States and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during initial attacks. A tenuous two-week ceasefire was established on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but it disintegrated when peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran in Islamabad broke down on April 12 due to Iran’s unwillingness to relinquish its nuclear ambitions. Trump retaliated by declaring a U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, causing oil prices to spike to approximately $100 per barrel. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed in March that Trump “wisely keeps his options on the table” when questioned about potentially reinstating a military draft.

Trump obtained four student deferments during the Vietnam conflict while studying at Fordham University and the Wharton School. Following his 1968 graduation, he was granted a medical exemption at age 22 for bone spurs in his heels. The daughters of the Queens podiatrist who issued the diagnosis subsequently informed The New York Times their father provided it as a favor to Trump’s father, Fred Trump, who rented him office space. Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, testified to Congress that when he asked Trump for medical records substantiating the claim, Trump “gave me none and said there was no surgery.” Trump attended the New York Military Academy, a prestigious military-style boarding school, but never served in the United States armed forces. Approximately two million Americans were drafted during the Vietnam War era before conscription ended in 1973.

The automatic registration framework marks a substantial shift from existing regulations, which mandate that men aged 18 to 25 must self-register within 30 days of reaching their 18th birthday. The Selective Service System permits late registrations up to age 26. Non-compliance results in severe penalties: imprisonment of up to 5 years, fines as high as $250,000, and possible exclusion from government employment and some state-based student aid.

Registration compliance has decreased in recent years, falling from 84% of eligible men in 2023 to 81% in 2024, based on Selective Service reports to Congress. At present, 46 states and territories automatically register men during driver’s license applications, but the proposed federal system would guarantee complete nationwide enrollment and eliminate the $11 million the agency expends yearly on advertising campaigns urging men to register.

Pennsylvania Democratic Representative Chrissy Houlahan, who sponsored the automatic registration language in the defense bill, said the change would allow the government to “rededicate resources—basically that means money—towards [readiness] and towards mobilization.”

This proposal emerges as Trump has substantially escalated American military operations worldwide, notwithstanding his 2024 campaign promises of peace. During 2025, his initial year returning to office, he ordered strikes in Venezuela to capture President Nicolás Maduro, commenced the war with Iran, and threatened to wipe Iran’s “whole civilization” off the planet. He has also threatened military action against Mexico and Colombia over drug trafficking, sought to annex Greenland from NATO ally Denmark, refused to rule out military force until walking back the threat in January, and asserted claims over the Panama Canal.

The transition to automatic registration has generated anxiety among certain Americans that authorities are preparing for possible mandatory conscription should the Iran conflict intensify or additional crises develop. Congress would need to pass legislation to authorize an actual draft before anyone could be compelled to serve. President Jimmy Carter signed the law requiring draft registration in 1980, and the United States has relied on an all-volunteer military force since the Vietnam War ended.

The proposal continues to undergo regulatory review. If authorized, the system would constitute the most substantial modification to military draft registration processes in over four decades, automatically registering millions of young American men in a database designed exclusively to enable swift mobilization during a national emergency requiring congressional authorization of a draft.

Trump has also mused publicly about awarding himself the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration, reserved for those who demonstrate extraordinary valor in combat. During his State of the Union address in February, Trump told 100-year-old Medal of Honor recipient Capt. E. Royce Williams, “I’ve always wanted the Congressional Medal of Honor, but I was informed I’m not allowed to give it to myself.” More than 3,500 recipients have received the award since its establishment in 1861, all of whom served in the military.
