Academy Award-winning star Nicole Kidman has discussed publicly for the first time her separation from country music artist Keith Urban, sharing with Variety that she is focusing on moving forward with her family following the end of nearly two decades of marriage this year.

The 58-year-old star submitted divorce papers on September 30, 2025, referencing irreconcilable differences, with sources indicating the couple had been separated since early summer. A judge in Tennessee officially finalized the dissolution on January 6, 2026, bringing to a close a union that started at the Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel in Sydney in 2006.

“I am, because I’m always going to be moving toward what’s good,” Kidman told Variety when asked how she was doing since the separation. “What I’m grateful for is my family and keeping them as is and moving forward. That’s that. Everything else I don’t discuss out of respect.”

Under the completed settlement, Kidman was granted main custody of their two daughters: Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15. The custody plan provides Kidman with 306 days annually with the children and allows Urban visitation rights every other weekend. Major decisions about the kids will be shared between both parents, and no child or spousal support will be paid by either party. Their property was distributed through mutual consent, according to court filings.

Both Kidman and Urban were absent from the Nashville court proceeding that finalized the divorce. The children will continue living in Nashville, where Kidman serves as the main residential parent.

In spite of the disruption, Kidman plans to remain in the Tennessee city that has been her home for almost twenty years. She informed Variety that Nashville is integral to her identity and significant to her daughters, noting she has been “part of the city and community for 20 years.”

Kidman and Urban purchased their Nashville property in 2008 for $3.47 million — a 10,925-square-foot residence in the gated Northumberland development, called the “Queen of Northumberland.” The estate, situated on approximately two acres, features seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a pool, tennis court, and home theater. According to sources, Kidman decided to remain in the residence to offer consistency for the girls during this period.

She has additionally developed deep connections in Nashville, mentioning close, “ride-or-die” friends there. She resides near longtime friend and “Big Little Lies” co-star Reese Witherspoon — Kidman informed Variety the two “live opposite each other” and enjoyed a long walk together the morning of the interview. Nashville has also evolved into part of her professional life, with her series “Scarpetta” shot there and streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

This marks Kidman’s second divorce; she was formerly married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001, and they adopted two children: Isabella, now 32, and Connor, now 31. Kidman married Urban, an Australian country singer, in 2006 after encountering him at the G’Day USA Gala in Los Angeles in 2005 — it was Urban’s first marriage.

In the Variety interview, Kidman looked back on marrying Cruise at 23. She has earlier spoken about how young she was when beginning a family but maintained her attention on the present during this conversation.

Looking back on 2025, Kidman acknowledged it was a difficult year personally. “I was quiet. I had other things going on. I was in my shell,” she told Variety. Nevertheless, she conveyed optimism for 2026, saying she would be in “full witch mode” for the upcoming “Practical Magic” sequel with Sandra Bullock, set to release on September 11.

In addition to that sequel, Kidman’s 2026 projects include starring in “Scarpetta” on Prime Video, continuing work on season three of Taylor Sheridan’s “Lioness,” and appearing in a supporting role in the newest horror film from director Osgood Perkins.

During the interview, Kidman emphasized her commitment to maintaining a unified family, saying she is “staying in a place of, ‘We are a family,’ and that’s what we’ll continue to be.”

Kidman posted a photo with her daughters on New Year’s Day, demonstrating her emphasis on the future. Reports suggest the children spend notably more time with Kidman than with Urban, though there is reportedly “no drama” over the custody arrangements.

Under the settlement terms, Kidman declined alimony and child support, maintaining the financial independence that has characterized her extensive career in Hollywood.

On March 15, Kidman looked glamorous and radiant as she presented an award at the 2026 Oscars. Kidman walked the red carpet in showgirl style, wearing a custom Chanel gown by Matthieu Blazy, a powder pink silk creation with a bustier embellished with white and gray crystals and black beads, and a peplum waist of beige, pink, nude, and apricot feathers that flowed down onto the skirt.
