Her parents chronicled the Brazilian girl’s life with a rare, fatal aging disorder for an audience of more than 1.5 million Instagram followers. Elis Lima Carneiro died Sept. 30, 2026. She was five.

Her older brother, Guilherme Lago, announced the death on Sept. 30 in an emotional video posted to the sisters’ Instagram profile. “Hoje a Elis descansa no Senhor. É muito difícil porque a gente não queria que acontecesse, mas não podemos ser egoístas e eu acho que o Senhor foi muito bom com a gente,” Lago said.

Elis had Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), a rare genetic condition that causes rapid aging in young children. Brazilian outlets reported that she died of a widespread lung infection. She was born May 4, 2021.

A Goodbye Open to All

The family held a wake at the chapel of the Shalon funeral home in Boa Vista, Brazil. An Instagram post said anyone who wanted to come was invited: “Everyone who wishes to say goodbye to Elis, offer their solidarity to our family or accompany us on this last path will be very welcome.” The post closed, “Thank you for all the love you always had for our little one.”

The funeral procession left the Shalon Funeral Home Chapel at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 1 for Parque Campo da Saudade Cemetery, with burial scheduled for 10:30 a.m. The turnout in Boa Vista reflected the strength of the community formed around her.

The family wrote in a follow-up Instagram post on Oct. 1, after the burial, “Today, love was present in every hug, every tear and every person who was there to say goodbye to our Elis.” In the same post, the family said, “Our little girl had a captivating smile, so many laughs and a unique way about her that won over so many hearts.”

Twins With a Rare Diagnosis

Doctors also diagnosed HGPS in Eloá, Elis’ twin sister. Researchers, reporters and strangers were drawn to the account her parents kept by one detail in particular: the two are believed to be the only twins in the world living with the condition. The syndrome is fatal, and average life expectancy for those who have it is about 14.5 years.

The twins’ parents are advocates for the rights of people with rare syndromes, and Elis herself had attended public hearings on the subject, according to an Oct. 1 report.

Tributes Fill the Comments

The Instagram post announcing the death drew more than 936,000 likes and nearly 100,000 comments as of Oct. 1. Brazilian singer Ana Castela and Gabrielle Prado were among the entertainment-world figures who mourned publicly, leaving condolences on the family’s post. Some commenters said their feeds had been the first place they saw the news.

The account showed Elis playing with toys, sitting through doctor’s appointments and spending time with family — the ordinary texture of a small child’s days. Eleismar Carneiro, her mother, told local media that her daughter never showed fear, that Elis loved funny things and that she laughed at everything.

Internet users, once the news broke, returned again and again to the bravery Elis showed through a complicated illness she faced over a long period. Tributes filled her comment sections within hours. What the account preserves is a childhood lived largely in view of strangers, from the toys to the hospital corridors to the ordinary afternoons.
