Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama, or king, of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, was a toddler when he entered the record books. He died at the age of 34, around 10 p.m. local time on Thursday, August 27, 2026. As of September 2, the kingdom’s official memorial page had published 191 messages of condolence and counted 375 candles lit in the king’s memory, with 26 countries represented.
The country breakdown on the site lists Uganda at 126, “Other” at 23, the United States at five, the United Kingdom at four, and Kenya, Belgium, Brazil and the Democratic Republic of the Congo at three each. A single mourning motto has gathered the kingdom’s grief: “Omukama Atulize. Enkuba Etutire.” The kingdom opened a physical Book of Condolences at Buziga Palace on August 28.
In a statement issued August 27, Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced the death and appealed to the Batooro to stay united, calm and prayerful. “This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda,” Akiiki said. No cause of death appeared in that first announcement, which said only that the monarch had been critically ill and receiving treatment in the United States.
Museveni Reveals Cancer Battle
An aggressive cancer had killed the king while he was under medical care in the United States, Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni wrote in a statement on his official X account, filling in details that came later. The diagnosis had been brought to him months earlier, he said, by Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, known as Nyinomukama, who came to tell him of it. Travel to Germany for treatment, and then to the United States, where the king died, was supported by the government for the family.
His condolences to the royal family came on behalf of himself, First Lady Janet Kainembabazi Museveni and all Ugandans, and he lamented that a monarch orphaned as a small boy had himself died young. “How unfair life can be!!” Museveni wrote, adding that King Oyo had shown potential for working with central and local government to develop Tooro.
A King Crowned at Three
Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III died at 49, and the son who would become a global curiosity — born April 16, 1992 — was crowned in September 1995. He was three when he took the throne of a kingdom in western Uganda, and Guinness World Records recognized him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
Through his childhood, a regency that included the queen mother ran the kingdom’s traditional affairs, and his official coronation waited until he turned 18. Reaching adulthood in 2010, he assumed full direct leadership, and his reign ran nearly 31 years in all. Tooro, a kingdom established in the early 19th century, made him its 13th monarch, and from the royal seat at Karuziika Hill in Fort Portal he served as custodian of the heritage of more than two million Batooro.
An elected president and parliament govern Uganda, a republic, but the country is also home to several traditional monarchies whose political power is largely symbolic even as their cultural and social influence remains substantial. Youth empowerment, education and vocational training, environmental and climate conservation, healthcare and HIV/AIDS awareness were the causes on which King Oyo used that space to build a public profile.
A Nation and a Continent Mourn
The country’s largest and most influential traditional institution, Buganda Kingdom, said its mourning was shared with the people of Tooro, while Rwenzururu Kingdom also sent condolences to all those grieving the loss. Calling the late monarch a genuine ally of the game, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations ordered that a moment of silence precede kickoff at every match through September 4.
One million trees would be planted in the king’s honor during the mourning period, said Margaret Muhanga, a government minister and the member of parliament for Fort Portal City North, who described the mood across the kingdom as somber, with nobody smiling. Among the public figures who paid tribute were the pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine and Ugandan musician Juliana Kanyomozi, whose Instagram post called it a dark day for Tooro. Organizers of the Tooro Annual Youth Conference 2026 said they were joining the people of Tooro in mourning as the kingdom postponed the event.
Succession and an Official Burial
A hereditary system decides who wears the Tooro crown, and the line is intact, the kingdom says, even though King Oyo was unmarried. A prince was left as heir by the king, Akiiki said, and that heir’s identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in keeping with the traditions and customs of Tooro. Continuity of the crown, the prime minister said, is assured. Before the death was confirmed, Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara had said only that the king remained critically ill and under medical management in the United States. The task of identifying the successor and announcing him falls to a 21-member committee of Babiito elders, headed by Omujwera Musuuga Charles Kamurasi. A young boy heir would be introduced to the public at the right moment, the queen mother told him by telephone, according to the president’s account.
An official burial for the king has been directed by Museveni, who also ordered flags to fly at half-mast for three days, covering the burial itself along with the days immediately before and after it. The official nine-day mourning period, the kingdom said, begins only when the body reaches Karuziika Palace, not from the date of death. Museveni is to receive the remains in person at Entebbe International Airport on Thursday, September 3, and the casket will be taken directly to the palace at Fort Portal. No burial date has been announced. Funeral arrangements and the mourning program will be published through the kingdom’s verified channels, it said, and as of September 2 the memorial site still carried none of those details: its mourning arrangements and funeral programme sections each say only, “Official details will be published here.” The site’s most recent official communication remained dated August 28.
