An actress whose work spanned generations died in South Carolina on Aug. 16, according to a statement from her father. Hayden Panettiere was 36.
Emergency responders arrived at an apartment complex where Panettiere was discovered in cardiac arrest and unresponsive. Medical teams deployed advanced life-saving procedures, but she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. A preliminary police investigation found no indication of suspicious circumstances or foul play, according to a department spokesperson. An acquaintance made the emergency call. The autopsy conducted Aug. 17 revealed “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death.” Her representative stated the investigation continues.
Skip Panettiere, her father, issued a public statement mourning the loss. He called his daughter an extraordinary individual whose presence brought joy to family members and admirers globally, and he asked that the family be granted privacy while mourning.
Television Roles That Defined a Generation
Panettiere achieved widespread recognition at 17 when she was cast as Claire Bennet in NBC’s “Heroes,” portraying a high school cheerleader endowed with the ability to regenerate from any injury. The science fiction drama ran from 2006 through 2010 across four seasons, becoming a worldwide hit. Its tagline—”Save the cheerleader, save the world”—became embedded in popular culture, and her portrayal turned her into an international star.
Years later, she took on the complex character of Juliette Barnes in “Nashville,” a portrayal that earned her two Golden Globe nominations and demonstrated her depth as a performer. The role also showcased her musical abilities: she recorded 11 tracks for the show that appeared on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart during its broadcast run, two of which featured duets with co-star Connie Britton.

After “Nashville,” Panettiere spoke publicly about battles with mental health and addiction. She welcomed a daughter, Kaya Klitschko, in 2014 with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko, a Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion. In 2018, she gave Klitschko full custody, disclosing a prolonged period of depression, anxiety, alcoholism, and substance abuse.
