CNN Shocked By Public’s Response to Trump

A CNN data expert delivered grim news for the GOP this week, revealing that the Iran conflict has triggered a political meltdown among the core constituencies that put Republicans in power.

Harry Enten, the network’s chief data analyst, told viewers on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, that the military engagement is producing electoral carnage across demographic groups Republicans cannot afford to lose. The numbers, he warned, signal a crisis that could reshape both the upcoming midterms and President Donald Trump’s long-term political future.

Working-Class Revolt

The bleeding is most severe among voters without college degrees, the foundation of Trump’s coalition. A Marquette University Law School poll tracked their favorability rating of the president from plus-six in October 2024 to minus-22 this July. During a Friday broadcast, Enten told host John Berman the numbers were in freefall. “Down we go into the Atlantic Ocean,” he said.

An aggregate of multiple surveys showed the president carried this demographic by 13 percentage points in the 2024 election. That advantage has reversed to minus-19 in current polling averages. The constituency Trump relied on to build his candidacy is abandoning MAGA, Enten explained, creating jeopardy that extends beyond the educated voters who already opposed him.

Congressional preference among non-college voters has undergone a similar transformation. The group backed a Republican House by plus-13 after the last election. They now lean Democratic by one point, a shift Enten characterized as terrifying for GOP candidates facing November elections.

The War’s Approval Crater

Speaking on “News Central,” Enten highlighted what he termed the starkest warning: approval for the president’s Iran policy among highly engaged voters has plummeted 24 percentage points over two years, according to CNN/SSRS polling. He described the drop as “a giant fall,” noting it wiped out what had been a major strength entering the previous campaign.

The military action, undertaken without congressional approval, has unfolded as gasoline prices jumped from approximately $3 per gallon to over $4, squeezing family finances when voters anticipated economic relief. Trump’s 2024 campaign centered on lowering costs and staying out of foreign conflicts. His loss of support among motivated voters, Enten said, stems from their perception that he broke those core promises.

Only 27 percent of all voters expect Washington will negotiate a favorable settlement with Iran, Fox News polling indicates, while Republican confidence stands at 41 percent. Enten called the fact that every group polled below 50 percent the most shocking result, suggesting Americans see neither purpose nor exit strategy in the confrontation.

Republicans Lose National Security Dominance

The party’s traditional advantage on defense issues has vanished. Reuters/Ipsos polling showed Republicans leading Democrats by 18 points on handling wars, conflicts and terrorism in January 2025. The Democratic Party has reversed that deficit, moving ahead by 2 points in a 20-point swing attributed mainly to the Iran engagement.

Enten offered a blunt assessment for GOP candidates hoping to distance themselves from presidential troubles. That hope is misplaced, he said, because Republicans will sink alongside Trump, the two intertwined on this question.

GOP strategist David Winston acknowledged the danger, cautioning that Democrats could trigger a Blue Wave if they maintain economic advantages and double-digit leads with independents.

White House spokesperson Kush Desai pushed back, telling the Daily Beast that energy prices had returned to their previous levels after the administration signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding, and forecasting that inflation would decline once Trump forces an Iran settlement.

The damage may reach beyond domestic politics. Cash prediction markets once gave Trump a 33 percent chance of winning the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize under a year ago. That probability has fallen to just 4 percent. Enten said the Iran war dragged those prospects down.

The contrast with recent assessments is sharp. This July, the president promoted a segment in which the analyst documented his primary power, noting Trump’s endorsement lifted South Carolina Sen. Darline Graham Nordone’s primary chances from 14 percent to 80 percent on the prediction market Kalshi. Graham Nordone, who had never served in elected office before being appointed to the seat her late brother, Lindsey Graham, once held, has moved forward to face Rep. Ralph Norman in a Republican primary runoff. The analyst attributed Trump’s Senate primary performance since 2022 to his backing, which helped candidates win in 95 percent of open seats.

Yet control over Republican primaries has not produced general-election resilience. The same analyst who once charted Trump’s party dominance is now documenting its rapid erosion among the broader voting public ahead of November.
