Six employees of a youth welfare facility in Stade, Germany, were killed on June 29, 2026, when a 45-year-old man opened fire during a scheduled appointment to discuss custody of his infant daughter. The facility on Dankersstrasse provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women and young mothers with children.
The suspect, a Turkish national born in Germany and living in the Hanover area, had been engaged in a custody dispute over his infant daughter. His three-month-old daughter and her 34-year-old mother were inside the building during the attack but were not harmed. Four women and two men — all staff members — were shot during the assault that began around 12:10 local time. Five died at the scene, while a sixth victim died later in hospital. Several others sustained injuries, some serious.
Family Dispute Behind Attack
The shooting erupted during an appointment the suspect had at the center to discuss custody arrangements for his daughter. Prosecutors described the incident as an “extended family tragedy” with no signs of femicide or political motivation. Lower Saxony Interior Minister Daniela Behrens characterized the killings as “an act of violence carried out in an extremely cold-blooded manner” at a press conference.
Lueneburg Police Chief Kathrin Schuol said the suspect had previously attracted the attention of authorities “in relation to threats” but had not been considered particularly dangerous. He did not possess a firearms licence.
Suspect Detained at Roadblock
Following the shooting, the suspect fled in a car driven by a woman. A witness told Focus Online that officers shouted at them to stop and fired multiple shots at the vehicle. Police stopped a Mercedes with a blown-out tyre at a roadblock on a nearby country road. Both occupants were ordered out and detained face-down on the pavement. The woman who drove the vehicle was believed to be a member of the suspect’s family or social circle. Authorities confirmed no other suspects remained at large and the public was not in further danger.
Schools Placed on Alert, Community in Shock
The welfare facility is located near a daycare center and a primary school. City Councillor Carsten Brokelmann said parents collected their children from both locations after word of the shooting spread. In a statement, Brokelmann said the community was relieved staff and children at the daycare center and primary school were safe, thanking police officers for their efforts in the chaotic situation and expressing the community’s deepest sympathies to the victims and their families.
Vitali Mertens, who lives across the street from the facility, said he heard the gunshots and watched emergency crews arrive almost immediately, telling reporters that “the whole area was cordoned off right away.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the attack “shocking to the core,” writing on social media that many people who had dedicated themselves to helping and protecting others had paid with their lives or their health. Police urged the public to disregard inaccurate information circulating through social media and messaging apps in the hours following the shooting.
Rare Violence in a Quiet Northern City
Stade, a small city of roughly 50,000 residents located approximately 45 to 50 kilometers west of Hamburg, experienced an attack that investigators described as extraordinary and deliberate. Germany maintains significantly more restrictive gun laws than the United States, and mass shootings remain rare within its borders. The violent assault on a facility designed to shelter vulnerable mothers and their newborns left the country absorbing the weight of what authorities described as an act of extraordinary, deliberate violence carried out against people whose only purpose was to provide care. The suspect had a scheduled appointment at the center — with many of the people he would go on to kill.
