Mel Schilling, the cherished relationship expert who assisted numerous pairs in discovering romance on the Australian and UK editions of “Married at First Sight (MAFS),” has passed away at age 53, merely 12 days following her announcement that her cancer had turned terminal.
Her spouse, Gareth Brisbane, shared the heartbreaking news on March 24, 2026, stating: “Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love.”
The energetic television figure’s passing concludes a harsh two-year struggle with colon cancer that she shared candidly with her supporters. Schilling initially found a tumor the size of a lemon in December 2023 following severe abdominal cramping while shooting the Australian edition of the reality program. She gave the tumor the nickname “Terry” and, following surgical removal, physicians originally declared her cancer-free.
However, the reprieve was fleeting. During a standard scan in late February 2024, medical professionals found small nodules on her lungs. The cancer had spread, and Schilling’s reality was devastated once more.
In spite of the dire outlook, she declined to abandon the profession she cherished. Throughout the following two years, Schilling endured 16 cycles of chemotherapy while simultaneously filming both the UK and Australian editions of “Married at First Sight.” Her spouse subsequently disclosed that even when she could scarcely raise her head from the pillow, she never missed a single day of filming.
In January 2025, physicians declared her cancer was in remission. Her optimism rose when she discovered she had been accepted for a groundbreaking gene-specific clinical trial that was set to commence in March 2026. For a period, it seemed she might conquer the illness.
Then arrived Christmas 2025, when Schilling began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down her right side. Following a battery of tests, physicians delivered her crushing news: the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain. Despite receiving several cycles of radiotherapy, her oncology team finally informed her there was nothing more they could do.
On March 12, 2026, Schilling disclosed on Instagram that she had received a terminal diagnosis. She said her light was beginning to fade quickly, but that she remained present, continuing to fight and surrounded by immense love. She added that everyday tasks had become very difficult, and she is depending on her loving family for care.
The swift advancement of the illness stopped her from joining the clinical trial that had provided such optimism.
Channel 4, the UK network that broadcast the program, honored Schilling, characterizing her as someone who “radiated joy, warmth and optimism” and “energised every room she walked into.” The station respected Schilling’s dying wish by continuing to broadcast “Married at First Sight” episodes showcasing her contributions, with an on-screen dedication stating: “It was Mel and her family’s wish that we carry on showing MAFS and celebrate her mission to help others find love and happiness.”
Australia’s Channel Nine also honored her, stating Schilling “had a gift for connecting with people” and that she led viewers “through the complexities of the human heart with wisdom, honesty, and kindness,” characterizing her as “a big part of our family.”
Her close friend and co-expert on “Married at First Sight” Australia John Aiken assumed her position on the UK edition with her approval. In a touching homage, Aiken characterized himself as “heartbroken, devastated and finding it hard to breathe,” stating that it “was a privilege and an honor to sit beside her on the MAFS couch and watch her shine.”
Condolences flooded in from associates and participants across both editions of the program. “This Morning” hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley shared her passing on live television, honoring the “bright and colourful” host. Co-expert on MAFS UK Charlene Douglas expressed that she was “devastated and heartbroken,” noting that she “had the pleasure of spending time with Mel in her last days.”
The 53-year-old Australian media personality had been a mainstay on both editions of the well-known reality show since her debut in 2016, providing her knowledge as a relationship psychologist to assist strangers in managing marriages after encountering each other at the altar. She participated in the Australian program for 12 seasons and additionally joined the UK edition beginning in 2021. Her vibrant character and authentic dedication to the couples’ achievements made her a viewer favorite who surpassed the conventional reality TV specialist position.
During her illness, Schilling stayed devoted to promoting awareness about the significance of early detection. In her last public statement, she encouraged followers: “If something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life.”
Schilling is survived by her husband, Gareth, whom she married in Bali in 2018 after meeting on a dating website in 2010, and their 10-year-old daughter, Maddie. In his statement of her death, Gareth shared a touching final moment: when he believed cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she beckoned him closer. She whispered a message for him and Maddie that would sustain him for the rest of his life. He concluded his memorial with a message to her followers: “Live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff.”
