Two teenagers tragically lost their lives while three others were injured in a car accident that occurred in the early hours of August 1, 2024, on Long Island, New York. The crash involved a 2010 Toyota Prius that turned over on the Southern State Parkway in Islip, leaving a scene of tragedy and chaos.
The accident took place around 2 a.m. near exit 43A on the eastbound Southern State Parkway. Responding to a 911 call, police discovered the overturned Prius in a wooded area off the shoulder of the parkway. The authorities identified the driver as Oliver Charles, 18, from Deer Park, and the passenger as Dymond Saunders, 17, from West Babylon. Both teenagers were declared dead at the scene by paramedics, leaving their friends and family in grief.
The three other passengers in the vehicle, who have not been identified, were transported to local hospitals with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. The New York State Police are currently investigating the cause of the accident and are urging any witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
Neighbor Ty Bridges, who witnessed Saunders entering the Prius on the evening of the accident, spoke of his shock and sorrow. He remembered Saunders as a jovial teenager who took immense pride in her red Buick.
Young drivers on Long Island face considerable risks due to a combination of hazardous driving behaviors and challenging road conditions. In 2023, the region recorded its highest number of fatal crashes involving drivers aged 16 to 20, with 32 incidents, surpassing the previous record of 29 in 2015. These alarming statistics have been attributed to factors such as changes in driver education due to the pandemic, which resulted in limited in-car instruction, and an increase in speeding. The unique road conditions of Long Island, with its winding and tree-lined roads designed for slower speeds, pose an additional risk to inexperienced drivers.
The community has rallied to support the bereaved families, with local churches and organizations offering counseling and assistance. A vigil is scheduled for Charles and Saunders, where community members, friends, and family will gather to commemorate their lives and share memories.
