Actress and pioneering boxing referee Gwen Farrell has passed away at age 93, leaving behind a legacy that spanned Hollywood soundstages and championship boxing rings.

Her son Keith Farrell confirmed to TMZ that she died of natural causes on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at her Sherman Oaks residence. Although some sources have reported her age as 94, her family announced her passing this week through a GoFundMe campaign set up to raise $13,000 for burial expenses.

Stepping Into The Ring

In 1980, Farrell broke into California boxing as a referee during an era when women held virtually no presence in the sport. She became among the first licensed women boxing referees in California and later joined the select group of women who officiated world title fights.

Her groundbreaking work in the ring earned her induction into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005, cementing a second career that became her defining achievement for many in the sport.

A Recurring Presence At The 4077th

Before stepping between the ropes, Farrell built her entertainment career on the small screen. From 1972 through 1983, she appeared across the entire run of the CBS war comedy “M*A*S*H,” making 26 episodes as various characters including Nurse Butler, Nurse Wilson, Nurse Able, and Nurse Gwen, plus several uncredited appearances.

Beyond the 4077th, she worked steadily through 1970s television and film. Her credits included “Starsky and Hutch” alongside roles in “Billy Jack Goes to Washington,” “Black Gunn,” “Soylent Green,” “Earthquake,” and “The Towering Inferno,” putting her in the thick of that decade’s disaster films and genre productions.

A Legacy Across Two Worlds

Born Gwendolyn “Gwen” Yancey Farrell in Austin, Texas, she came from entrepreneurial stock. Her father, Lovie Yancey, founded Fatburger, and family members wrote in a public tribute that she “carried forward that same determination and independence throughout her life.” The family described how she brought that self-made grit to both Hollywood and the boxing world, navigating each with equal resolve.

Family Remembers A Guiding Light

In their emotional tribute, Farrell’s loved ones remembered her as “a guiding light, and a steady source of love and wisdom.” As a mother and grandmother, she had a talent for making those around her feel valued and supported, all while never seeking the spotlight for herself.

She is survived by her son, Keith Farrell, and other family members committed to preserving her memory. Her story, as family and colleagues have noted, was defined not by celebrity but by her impact — whether in “M*A*S*H” operating rooms, at the center of championship bouts, or in the lives she touched personally.
