Four people were killed and at least ten injured in a shooting at a nightclub in Birmingham, Alabama on the evening of July 13, 2024, as confirmed by the Birmingham Police Department (BPD). The shooting took place at a privately held birthday party at a club located at 3400 27th Street North.

North Precinct officers received a call about multiple gunshot victims at 11:08 p.m. and promptly responded. Arriving on the scene, they found several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds both inside and outside the nightclub. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services (BFRS) were also quick to respond, and pronounced 39-year-old Stevie McGhee dead at the scene, found on the sidewalk outside the establishment.

Inside the venue, BFRS discovered two women, 42-year-old Markeisha Gettings and 56-year-old Angela Weatherspoon, who were also confirmed dead due to gunshot wounds. While police were securing the scene, further victims of the shooting started arriving at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, transported by BFRS personnel and private vehicles. Among them was 24-year-old Lerandus Anderson, who was later declared dead by the hospital.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department reported that at least ten individuals are currently being treated at UAB Hospital for gunshot injuries, with conditions varying from stable to critical. “This senseless act of violence has shaken our community to its core,” Fitzgerald stated. “We are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety of our citizens.”

The initial police investigation suggests that an altercation at the birthday party in the club led to the shooting. Authorities believe that following the argument, at least one suspect drove by and fired shots from the street into the club. Investigators are currently working diligently to establish the exact series of events and the identity of the suspects involved.

This shooting is the second violent incident in Birmingham within a six-hour span, following a separate shooting on Indian Summer Drive earlier in the evening that claimed the lives of three individuals, including a young child. This marks a particularly violent night in the city.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has urged the community to assist the BPD in their investigations. “We need swift justice for the victims and their families,” he stated. “The shooter or shooters deserve no safe harbor from their own family, friends, or strangers. Do not protect them.”

The Police Department has requested anyone with information about either shooting to contact them at 205-254-1764, or to provide anonymous tips by calling Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. For information leading to an arrest, a reward of $5,000 is being offered.

In the wake of these violent incidents, the BPD remains steadfast in its mission to restore safety and security in the community.

Additional help has been requested from federal law enforcement authorities to aid the Birmingham police in their investigation. This move aims to ensure a comprehensive and swift resolution to this tragic case.
