Calvin LeBrun, better known by his stage name Mister Cee, has passed away at the age of 57, according to reports.
LeBrun was a key figure in the hip-hop industry and is most notably remembered as Big Daddy Kane’s DJ. Additionally, he played a crucial role in the emergence and success of The Notorious B.I.G.
Confirming his death on Wednesday, April 10, Market President Chris Oliviero shared, “Tonight I share the sad news of the sudden passing of our 94.7 The Block colleague & friend, Mister Cee, a true iconic personality that left a lasting mark on the music and lifestyle culture of New York City and beyond,” he said.
Originating from the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, LeBrun first rose to prominence in the hip-hop world with his work on Big Daddy Kane’s debut album, “Long Live The Kane,” in 1988. Beyond music production, he made a name for himself as a popular radio host at Hot 97, leading the shows “Throwback at Noon” and “Friday Night Live.”
LeBrun’s relationship with Kevin “DJ 50 Grand” Griffin led to his introduction to Christopher Wallace, who later shot to fame as The Notorious B.I.G. This meeting resulted in Wallace’s first demo recordings, effectively kickstarting his career. LeBrun played a key role during these early stages and later acted as an associate producer on Wallace’s debut album in 1994, “Ready to Die.”
Despite personal setbacks, including arrests for soliciting prostitution that led to public discussions about his sexuality, LeBrun maintained his reputation in the hip-hop industry. These personal issues resulted in his resignation from Hot 97 in 2014, but he continued his radio career at other stations.
LeBrun’s legacy is underscored by his influence on the careers of influential hip-hop artists and his enduring impact on New York City’s DJ culture. Hot 97 acknowledged his work as having “shaped the very fabric of NYC’s DJ culture.”
LeBrun leaves behind a family and a host of fans and fellow musicians who are mourning his passing and commemorating his significant contributions to the world of music.
