Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana of Greece, after nearly 14 years of marriage, have announced their separation. The former Greek royal family revealed the news of their divorce through an official statement on their website on April 19, 2024.

The announcement comes on the heels of their recent attendance at a thanksgiving service for Greece’s King Constantine at Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Chapel in February 2024.

In the statement released by the ex-royal family, it was clarified that the decision was made with “great care and mutual respect” and highlighted their deep gratitude for the moments shared during their years together. The statement also pointed out that their future interactions will be governed by the same principles of mutual respect, evolving into a strong friendship in Greece.

The couple’s love story started with a grand wedding ceremony in August 2010 at the Cathedral of Ayios Nikolaos on the island of Spetses in Greece. The event was attended by several high-profile figures, including Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and future kings King Felipe of Spain and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. Queen Anne-Marie loaned the Antique Corsage Tiara to Princess Tatiana for the occasion, which added to the grandeur of the ceremony.

Despite the perception of their marriage being a fairy tale, it had its fair share of challenges. Princess Tatiana, despite her efforts to immerse herself in Greek culture and contribute to charity work, openly admitted to struggling to feel at home in Greece in past interviews.

Prince Nikolaos, 54, who had spent many years living abroad, always harbored the dream of returning to his homeland, a desire that contrasted with Tatiana’s initial hesitation and discomfort with the expectations of royal life in Greece. Tatiana, 43, born in Venezuela, made considerable efforts to adjust to her new life, engaging in local community work and cultural projects, but the attraction of a simpler, less public life remained.

As they adjust to this personal transition, Nikolaos and Tatiana, who do not have children, remain committed to their shared values and friendship. The royal family’s statement concluded with a call for privacy and respect during this transitional period, emphasizing the family’s ongoing support for both.

This separation marks a substantial chapter in the lives of the modern Greek royals, who continue to capture public interest and affection, despite the formal abolition of the monarchy in 1973 after King Constantine’s reign.
