Netflix has confirmed that Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry are broadening their presence in the streaming universe with two new nonfiction series under the Archewell Productions imprint. This expansion reflects the royal couple’s ongoing partnership with Netflix and their dedication to creating content that aligns with their principles and diverse interests.
The first series will feature Meghan Markle, returning to the screen to delve into her interests in cooking, gardening, entertaining, and forging friendships. Directed by Michael Steed, known for “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown,” and produced by Leah Hariton, the show aims to merge Meghan’s culinary interests with the ethos of community living.
Produced in partnership with a division of Sony Pictures Television, which has supported other successful ventures such as Hulu’s “The D’Amelio Show” and A&E’s “Leah Remini: Scientology & the Aftermath,” Meghan, who gained fame with “Suits,” will contribute as one of the executive producers.
The second series will offer audiences a glimpse into the competitive realm of professional polo, with filming taking place at the US Open Polo Championship at the USPA National Polo Center in Wellington, Florida. The documentary aims to highlight the commitment and fervor needed to excel in the sport. Prince Harry, a seasoned polo player, will act as an executive producer and is expected to contribute a personal viewpoint on the sport he deeply admires. The production will be managed by Milos Balac of FX’s “Welcome to Wrexham,” and supervised by Boardwalk Pictures, recognized for “Chef’s Table.”
These latest projects are part of a wider $100 million deal inked with Netflix in 2020, shortly after the couple relinquished their royal roles and relocated to the United States. They signify the continuation of the couple’s Netflix partnership, following the launch of their revealing documentary “Harry & Meghan” and other well-received series like “Live To Lead” and “Heart of Invictus.”
People within the industry have shown enthusiasm for the upcoming projects. “These projects are very close to their hearts, combining personal interests with their ambitions to produce meaningful content,” said an anonymous source close to the production. Another insider underscored the unique aspect of the polo series, stating, “It’s not just about the sport but the culture and community around it. There’s a lot to be told in the world of competitive polo that many aren’t aware of.”
Besides, Meghan has recently branched out into the podcast world, striking a deal with Lemonade Media to start a new series, while continuing her Spotify series “Archetypes.” The couple has also secured the screen rights to Carley Fortune’s “Meet Me at the Lake,” with plans for a film adaptation.
As fans and media analysts alike anticipate the titles and release dates for the new Netflix series, Meghan and Harry’s projects continue to carve a unique path in the media world that reflects their journey and values, promising to deliver genuine and relatable content to viewers.
