A North Carolina mother, aged 44, is facing two counts of first-degree murder following the discovery of her four-year-old twin sons’ bodies at her residence in Murphy.
The unfortunate event came to light when the father, separated from the mother, Genevieve Ellen Springer, found his children dead during a custody visit at her home on March 2. He immediately contacted law enforcement.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, alongside Cherokee County Emergency Services, acted on the father’s 911 call and started an investigation into the deaths.
The investigation resulted in Springer’s arrest in Union County, Georgia, following a short hospital stay for undisclosed reasons. After her release from the hospital, Springer was taken into custody, transferred to the Cherokee County Detention Center, and is being held without bond.
The exact date of the twins’ deaths remains uncertain due to a substantial timeline gap. The father claimed that he last saw his children alive on February 26, 2024.
Cherokee County Sheriff Dustin D. Smith has urged the community to unite and be vigilant in the protection of children, highlighting the necessity of communal efforts in ensuring the safety of the community’s younger members.
Arrangements for a critical incident debriefing to support the first responders affected by this traumatic event have been made. Sheriff Smith indicated that the children may have drowned; however, the final determination of the cause and time of death awaits autopsy results.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office continues its active investigation into the deaths, in cooperation with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the district attorney’s office, to decipher the events leading to this tragic event.
