Kissimmee, Florida has been thrust into the national spotlight for unfortunate reasons. The search for Madeline Soto, a 13-year-old girl who vanished ended on a tragic note. Authorities confirmed on Friday, March 1, 2024, the discovery of her body, extinguishing hopes for her safe return.

A Disturbing Discovery in Osceola County

Authorities concluded the search for Madeline around 4:30 p.m. in a secluded Osceola County forest. The remains, dressed in clothing similar to Madeline’s last outfit, confirmed the community’s and her family’s worst fears.

Prime Suspect: A Mother’s Boyfriend Under Investigation

Madeline’s mother Jennifer Soto’s boyfriend, Stephan Sterns, 37, is the primary suspect in the case. Sterns, the last person reportedly seen with Madeline alive, was initially arrested on unrelated charges including sexual battery and possession of child sexual abuse material. His arrest followed the discovery of incriminating evidence on his phone, even though he tried to delete evidence by doing a factory reset of his phone, and later video footage of Sterns disposing of items in a Kissimmee apartment complex dumpster on the day Madeline was reported missing.

Investigative Evidence: Constructing a Timeline

Orange County Sheriff John Mina stated in a press conference that it is believed Madeline Soto was already deceased when Sterns moved her body. “Based on the evidence, we believe Sterns relocated her body post-mortem,” Mina stated, emphasizing the gravity of the case. Video footage showing Sterns discarding items linked to Madeline reinforces this theory, as investigators continue building a detailed event timeline.

Detectives are working relentlessly to gather evidence, including Madeline’s backpack and school-issued laptop found in the dumpster, along with forensic analysis to determine the exact cause of death.

Community Grief: Honoring Madeline

The local community is profoundly affected by Madeline Soto’s death, leading to widespread grief and support for her mourning family. The Kissimmee Police Department now leads the investigation as the community grapples with the tragic loss of the young girl and the unsettling reality that her mother’s boyfriend is the prime suspect.

Law enforcement is urging the public to assist, emphasizing the significance of any information that could help solve the case and secure justice for Madeline. In response to the tragedy, her school organized a prayer vigil and provided counseling services for affected students and faculty.

Path to Justice: Ongoing Investigation

As the community and Madeline’s family await answers, the pursuit of justice remains a top priority, underpinned by a collective determination to uncover the truth and hold those accountable.

Sterns was absent from his initial court session in Osceola County, and at his attorney’s request, the charges were not read aloud.

The State Attorney’s Office on Tuesday, March 12 filed 60 new criminal charges against the prime suspect, Stephan Sterns, in Madeline’s disappearance. Sterns stands accused of sexually assaulting a child below the age of 12. Additionally, he faces five charges of sexual battery involving a child within the age group of 12 to 18, along with seven counts of indecent molestation. Moreover, 40 counts have been laid against him for unlawfully possessing materials that portray a child’s sexual performance, with the image count being at least ten or more. All these charges have been brought forth by the Kissimmee Police Department.

He is still detained at the Osceola County Jail following his apprehension on February 28 on a separate allegation. The charges include sexual assault and holding illicit material related to child sexual exploitation. On the evening of his capture, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office designated him as the key suspect in the vanishing of Madeline.

Sterns is slated for arraignment related to these charges on the 2nd of April. Based on information from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, a sexual assault on a minor below the age of 12 is considered a capital offense and could lead to life imprisonment or a death sentence upon conviction. His additional charges could potentially lead to life sentences, or alternatively, a prison term of 15 years for each charge.
