Jonathan Mauk, a 59-year-old father of three and grandfather of two, was fatally shot in a Walmart parking lot in Highland, California on Monday, February 5, 2024, following a minor auto collision.

Mauk, who was known for his dedication to his family, was at Walmart to purchase ingredients for a beef jerky recipe. According to the San Bernardino Police, Mauk was parking his custom-built 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Supersport when it accidentally grazed another vehicle. Both Mauk and the other driver, identified as 37-year-old Shawntece Marie Norton, were backing up their cars at the time of the incident. Mauk reportedly approached Norton to apologize after the collision.

The situation rapidly escalated from a verbal exchange, with Norton doing all of the shouting according to witnesses, to a fatal encounter. Norton allegedly retrieved a firearm from her car and shot Mauk, who died from his injuries at the scene.

Following a swift investigation, law enforcement officers apprehended Norton at an apartment complex within 12 hours of the shooting. During her arrest, an unregistered firearm, believed to be the murder weapon, was confiscated. Norton is facing charges of murder with additional sentencing enhancements for the use of a firearm, discharging a firearm, and inflicting significant bodily harm. She has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody pending a pre-preliminary hearing.

Mauk’s death has deeply affected his family. His son, Matthew Mauk, has shared fond memories of his father’s generous spirit, including a heartfelt letter discovered posthumously where Jonathan expressed his love for his grandchildren and his willingness to sacrifice for his family.

The community has rallied around the Mauk family in their time of grief. A GoFundMe campaign initiated to cover funeral expenses has raised over $7,000 so far.
