Fred Sheldon Greenfield, known professionally as Shecky Greene, a prominent figure in American stand-up comedy, particularly noted for his extensive career in Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on December 31, 2023, at the age of 97 at his Las Vegas home.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 8, 1926, Greene’s early life saw him gravitate towards comedy. He began his comedic journey in Milwaukee while attending college, later moving through the nightclub circuits in Miami and Chicago. His career took a significant turn when he moved to Las Vegas in the 1950s, a city that would become synonymous with his name.

Greene’s style, characterized by its adaptability and spontaneity, captivated audiences. He was known for his ability to tailor each performance to the audience, incorporating jokes, singing, storytelling, and improvising songs. This unique approach made him a favorite among nightclub patrons and fellow entertainers alike, with comedian Jerry Lewis notably calling him “the epitome of comic genius.”

His Vegas tenure was marked by several career highlights. Greene performed for 18 weeks at the Last Frontier Hotel in 1954, becoming one of the first major comedy acts to grace the city. He then headlined at the Tropicana Hotel for five years from 1957 to 1962, where he established himself as a staple of the Las Vegas entertainment scene. His popularity soared to the extent that, in 1975, he was earning a salary of $150,000 per week at the MGM Grand Hotel.

Greene’s influence extended beyond nightclubs. He made over 40 appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, showcasing his talent to a national audience. Additionally, Greene’s film and television career included roles in several movies, including “Tony Rome,” “History of the World Part I,” and “Splash.” He had brief roles in the TV shows “Mad About You,” “Laverne & Shirley,” and “Love, American Style.” He also played a part in the TV series “Combat!”

Despite his success, Greene’s career was not without challenges. He battled various medical and personal issues, including depression, bipolar disorder, stage fright, substance abuse, and gambling problems. However, these did not hinder his professional pursuits. He continued performing until the later years of his life, with his final performances in Las Vegas occurring in 2011.

Greene’s contributions to comedy were formally recognized when he was inducted into the National Comedy Hall of Fame in March 2020. The ceremony, held in Las Vegas, honored his impact on the comedy landscape, particularly in Las Vegas, where he helped pioneer the tradition of stand-up comedy in nightclubs.

Shecky Greene’s legacy is marked by his pioneering role in establishing Las Vegas as a hub for stand-up comedy and his adaptability as a performer. His style, blending humor with music and storytelling, set a precedent for future generations of comedians. He is remembered not only for his contributions to the entertainment industry but also for his resilience in facing personal challenges throughout his career.
