A tragic accident unfolded on Interstate 81 in northeastern Pennsylvania, leading to the deaths of five women, reportedly from the same family. They were hit by a tractor-trailer after stepping out of their vehicles.

The fatal incident took place on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, under challenging weather conditions.

Close to 5:15 p.m., in the vicinity of Scott Township, which is north of Scranton, Pennsylvania, a 2022 Honda Odyssey minivan carrying four women was heading north. The minivan lost control and collided with a median barrier, rendering it immobile in the left lane of the highway.

Two family members, driving an Audi A6, stopped on the right shoulder of the highway after witnessing the crash.

Upon exiting their Audi, they crossed the highway and joined two women who had already left the minivan. While they were standing near the minivan, a tractor-trailer drove into the driver’s side of the Odyssey, hitting the four women standing outside, killing three on the spot. The remaining two occupants inside the minivan also died.

The victims were identified by the Pennsylvania State Police and were all confirmed dead at the crash site.

The deceased, as reported by Fox59, included Fatma Ahmed, 71, from Binghamton, New York; Shahzinaz Mizouri, 56, from Vestal, New York; Berivan Zebara, 43, and Aleen Ameen, 19, both from Johnson City, New York; and Harvrist Zebari, 42, from Endwell, New York.

Parjan Ameen, 22, the Audi driver from Johnson City, New York, sustained moderate injuries, while the tractor-trailer driver suffered minor injuries.

The Pennsylvania State Police have initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the precise circumstances that led to this deadly incident.
