Renowned “Dr. Who” Actor Passes Away at 87

Richard Franklin, a distinguished British actor, best recognized for his portrayal of Captain Mike Yates in “Doctor Who” and for his role in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” passed away at the age of 87.

Liam Rudden, his close friend and social media manager, confirmed that Franklin died peacefully in his sleep following a prolonged illness on Monday, December 25, 2023.

Franklin’s career in acting extended over many decades, winning the hearts of audiences with his dynamic performances in both television and theater. 

He first came into the spotlight with his role in the British television series “Dixon of Dock Green” in 1966, marking his debut on TV. He achieved significant recognition in the ITV soap “Crossroads,” paving the way for a series of notable roles in television shows such as “The Doctors,” “Little Women,” and “The Borgias.”

Franklin’s most iconic role, however, was as Captain Mike Yates in the legendary science fiction series “Doctor Who,” which he played from 1971 to 1974, during Jon Pertwee’s era as the Doctor. His portrayal had a profound influence on fans of the series and the science fiction world at large.

In addition to his television work, Franklin appeared in the 2016 movie “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” He also had a significant role in the British soap opera “Emmerdale Farm,” playing Denis Rigg for two years.

Franklin was also notably active in politics. He wrote “Forest Wisdom: Radical Reform of Democracy and the Welfare State” and ran as a parliamentary candidate for various parties, including the Liberal Democrats in 1992 and UKIP in 2001. He founded the Silent Majority Party and ran in the 2005 general election.

In his statement, Rudden emphasized Franklin’s kindness, creativity, and exceptional storytelling ability. He remarked that Franklin’s legacy of joy and entertainment would continue to live on.
