Emily Matson, a popular news anchor and reporter with Erie News Now in Erie, Pennsylvania, died at the age of 42. Her parent company confirmed the news on Monday, December 11.
Following an investigation, the Erie County Coroner’s Office concluded that her death was a suicide. She jumped in front of a train and was fatally struck.
Celebrated for her journalistic integrity, Matson was deeply connected to the Erie community.
Matson’s entry into journalism began as an intern at WJET-TV in Erie in the early 2000s. Her dedication and talent soon led her to a producer role at WICU, followed by a shift to on-air reporting, focusing on the crime beat. In this role, Matson felt she was positively impacting the community.
Throughout her career, Matson garnered recognition for her excellence in journalism. She co-anchored the nightly news on WICU at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., receiving two Outstanding Spot News Awards from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters. Her ability to produce engaging, high-quality news stories distinguished her in the field of broadcast journalism.
Matson was also known for her positive impact beyond her professional work. Colleagues and viewers appreciated her upbeat and personable approach to broadcasting. She was recognized for her radiant smile and friendly demeanor, enhancing the experience of daily news consumption. Matson was remembered in the newsroom as a guiding light, deeply passionate about Erie and Northwest Pennsylvania.
Matson’s last broadcast was the Friday prior to her passing. Lilly Broadcasting and the station expressed profound sadness and offered condolences to Matson’s family and her husband, Ryan.
