gunman fatally shot three people and wounded two more at the University of Virginia campus on Sunday night. All the slain were players on the school’s football team.

The gunman was identified by the University of Virginia Police Department as Christopher Darnell Jones Jr, a student and former football player at the school.

The students on the campus in Charlottesville were warned to shelter in place as the gunman was still on the loose after the incident.

Shots were fired at a garage on the campus at about 10:30 pm on Sunday night. The incident occurred on a school bus of students returning from a trip outside the campus.

Police warned that Jones was “armed and dangerous.” Virginia State police were searching for the suspect. They tracked him down after an overnight manhunt, on Monday, November 14 and arrested him.

Jim Ryan, the president of the university, reported the incident in an email to students and staff early Monday morning, informing them that three people were killed and two were injured and receiving medical attention.

“This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send,” he said, “and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia.”

The victims were identified as wide receivers Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler, and linebacker D’Sean Perry. One of the wounded is in critical condition and another is stable.

The motive for the attack is still unclear.
