The teenage children of an Irish woman and her New Zealand-born husband found their parents’ naked bodies in a hot tub at a rented villa on Spain’s Mediterranean coast on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 25, 2026, and ran for help. Investigators in Valencia now believe the deaths were most likely accidental, after post-mortems ruled out foul play. More than 12 hours passed with the bodies lain undiscovered. The children were asleep upstairs, investigators believe, when the couple died late on the Monday night or in the early hours of Tuesday.
A residential property in the municipality of Cullera was where Spain’s Civil Guard initially reported finding a man aged 50 and a woman aged 45, both Irish; the resort town, home to roughly 25,000 people, sits about 25 miles south of the city of Valencia. That account was later corrected by the force. The woman was named as Thomasina Tobin, a 51-year-old Irish national from Castleblayney, County Monaghan; her husband, Patrick Tobin, 48, was a New Zealand citizen who had lived in Britain for about 26 years. The family had been staying at Cap Blanc, an upmarket gated development on the town’s coastline, when the children stumbled on the scene.
The alarm went up on the Tuesday afternoon, after the teenagers, aged 14 and 16, called out to their parents from upstairs, got no answer and searched the hilltop property room by room. It was the homeowner they went straight to, and it was the homeowner who called emergency services. Responding to that call were the Civil Guard, which is leading the investigation, and local police employed by Cullera Town Hall. Thomasina Tobin is described as a Trinity College Dublin graduate.
What Officers Found at the Scene
Whatever met the first officers at the villa was enough to hand the case to a specialist homicide unit in Valencia: the Civil Guard has described it as possible evidence that a crime had taken place. What those officers saw was something its spokesperson would not spell out precisely, beyond saying that it raised the possibility the couple had not died of natural causes. Nothing had yet been ruled out, the spokesperson said.
Particular attention has fallen on one detail. The water in the hot tub struck officers as unusually cloudy, and they took a sample for testing at a specialist laboratory. That step is routine, a source close to the investigation said, and the analysis could reveal, among other things, whether the water contains DNA from a third person.
The couple had injuries consistent with puncture wounds, local reports said. An assault was not necessarily what those marks pointed to, investigators cautioned early on, and they did not rule out the possibility that the pair suffered some kind of accident in the hot tub. Door-to-door inquiries around the development have followed, with Detectives asking neighbors for anything that might distinguish an accident from a killing.
No visible signs of violence were carried by the bodies, a Civil Guard spokesperson said by Wednesday, August 26, adding that initial reports indicated foul play was not the cause of death. “That does not mean this was a homicide,” said Pablo Cea, a spokesman for the Civil Guard in Valencia, earlier in the case. “It could be an accident — every hypothesis is open for investigation.”
A Gated Enclave Above the Bay

Below runs the beach, 630 meters of golden sand in a semi-urban setting. In a place like that, nobody could miss an afternoon convoy of patrol cars, and homicide detectives turning up caused a stir. Neighbors had spent the day on the sand; they came home to the news that two people had died a few doors away.
On Spain’s official tourism website, Cullera itself is promoted as a summer resort where a well-kept old town sits alongside modern leisure developments built around the sun and the beach. A holiday at the residential complex is what the family is understood to have been on, though how long they had been in the area was not immediately clear.
Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, August 25, the bodies were removed from the property. Their destination was the Institute of Legal Medicine in Valencia, where autopsies are to be carried out.
Children Taken to a Hotel in Cullera
Local authorities have made the two siblings their immediate priority. The pair are described as traumatized and do not speak Spanish, and a social worker and a psychologist were dispatched to Cullera to look after them. Even before their parents’ deaths, both are said to have special needs and to have required support beyond that given to other children their age.
A hotel in the town took in the teenagers, who were expected to be reunited with family there. Custody of them was to pass to Three relatives who flew from Ireland, arriving in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26; the children, meanwhile, received psychological support.
Consular assistance is being provided to the Irish citizen concerned, Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said, adding that it is aware of the case but, as with all consular matters, does not discuss the details of individual cases.
New Zealand consular authorities are assisting Patrick Tobin’s family in New Zealand and the UK, and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is aware of his death.
Answers May Take Time
Results of the autopsies, which have since been carried out, have not been made public. Sources close to the investigation said the indications are that the deaths were accidental, and that no sign of forced entry was found at the villa. Investigators now believe the trigger was “a technical failure in the jacuzzi’s suction system,” which left Thomasina Tobin “trapped in the water,” the Valencia newspaper Las Provincias reported on August 29. According to the same report, the Civil Guard and forensic experts believe Patrick Tobin may have suffered a lethal electric shock while handling the defective installation with his wet body, or when he put his hand into the mechanism to switch it off. Under the same theory, the puncture marks found on at least one of the bodies could date from that sequence. Sources close to the investigation said on August 28 that they are not treating the incident as a crime but still cannot determine exact causes of death, pending post-autopsy tests on blood, urine and tissue samples to be conducted at a specialist laboratory in Barcelona; the cloudy jacuzzi water is also still being analysed.
