David Furnish offered a comforting update on husband Elton John’s condition this week, telling Variety the music legend is “battling on” despite persistent vision issues that have affected the 78-year-old singer over the last year.
Speaking before the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Furnish described a contented home life for the EGOT winner, who stepped away from touring to concentrate on family.
Furnish said John is doing well, continuing to push forward, staying active and focused at home with their sons — the reason he stopped touring.
Furnish and John are parents to two sons: Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13. Since John ended his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in July 2023, the family has kept a relatively low profile, swapping sold-out stadiums for life near Windsor Castle.
The “Rocket Man” has been open about his mounting health problems in recent years. In July 2024, John lost vision in his right eye after a severe infection contracted while on holiday in the south of France. On Good Morning America that November, he disclosed the severity of his situation: four months without sight in his right eye and limited vision in his left.
The vision loss is the latest in a string of medical setbacks for the veteran performer. At the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” he recounted his health history with his usual wit, listing surgeries on his knees, right hip, prostate, appendix, and tonsils.
“To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left,” John joked. “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip.”
In 2021, John endured a painful fall that forced him to postpone several farewell tour dates. He had hip surgery and then completed intensive physiotherapy to regain full mobility and return to performing.
Amid these issues, John stays actively involved in philanthropy. The annual Academy Awards viewing party, now in its 34th year, raises funds for HIV/AIDS research and advocacy through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised more than ÂŁ300 million since 1992.
This year’s party will be co-hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka. Grammy winner Lola Young will perform, and the guest list includes stars such as Dua Lipa, Donatella Versace, Keke Palmer, Quinta Brunson, Jon Batiste, Nikki Glaser, Adam Lambert, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Ritter, and Sharon Stone.
Furnish expressed confidence about this year’s fundraising targets, aiming to top $9 million for the foundation. He noted that last year’s efforts were complicated by the catastrophic Los Angeles fires in January 2025, which killed at least 31 people and destroyed over 18,000 structures across Pacific Palisades and Altadena, creating competing charitable needs across Southern California.
Ticket demand is strong this year, Furnish said, and the event will showcase a special artwork by Irish painter Jack Coulter. Coulter painted live while John played “Tiny Dancer” on piano — a one-off collaboration that will be auctioned during the evening.
John and Furnish were seen together at Donatella Versace’s New Year’s Eve party in 2025 with Zachary and Elijah. The uncommon public outing highlighted the family’s efforts to stay close despite John’s ongoing health concerns.
Although John stepped away from touring, Furnish’s remarks suggest the singer has found serenity in this stage of life. He prioritizes family time while continuing to support the causes that define his legacy beyond music. For fans worried about the beloved artist, Furnish’s comments offer reassurance: John is in good spirits, surrounded by love, and staying engaged despite his physical challenges.
