Nicholas Brendon, the cherished actor best known for playing Xander Harris on the cult TV hit “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died at 54. His family said he passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes on March 20, 2026.

Brendon portrayed the loyal, self-effacing Xander Harris across all seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” between 1997 and 2003, acting as Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character’s closest friend. His work as the show’s relatable everyman earned him three Saturn Award nominations—two for Best Genre TV Actor (1998 and 1999) and one for Best Supporting Actor (2000).

Born in Los Angeles, he infused the role with warmth and comedy, standing out as the only core group member without supernatural abilities. Brendon’s twin brother, Kelly Donovan, served as his body double on the series, most famously in the fifth-season episode “The Replacement,” in which Xander is split into two versions of himself.

Gellar honored her former co-star on Instagram by quoting one of Xander’s most moving monologues from Season 7. “I saw you Nicky,” she added. “I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”

Emma Caulfield, who played Xander’s romantic interest Anya, posted a video tribute saying: “My heart is heavy. I can’t put into words just how this has hit me. Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you.”

The announcement comes days after Hulu shelved a planned “Buffy” reboot. On March 14, 2026, Gellar revealed on Instagram that the streamer would not proceed with “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” which had been expected to feature her alongside a new young slayer portrayed by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

In 2023, Brendon reflected on the show’s lasting impact while marking the 20th anniversary of its finale, noting he still encountered fans almost daily who felt as if production had only recently ended.

Outside of “Buffy,” Brendon appeared in many TV series, including a recurring role as FBI technical analyst Kevin Lynch on “Criminal Minds” from 2007 to 2014, as well as appearances on “Private Practice” and “Kitchen Confidential.” His film work included “Psycho Beach Party,” “Big Gay Love,” “Redwood,” and “Coherence.”

He endured serious health problems over the years. In 2021, he reportedly experienced paralysis related to a spinal condition and underwent several surgeries for cauda equina syndrome, a rare disorder affecting movement and bodily functions. In 2022, he was hospitalized after a cardiac episode involving tachycardia and arrhythmia, and in 2023 he disclosed having had a heart attack and a congenital heart defect diagnosis.

Brendon lived with a stutter and became an outspoken advocate as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America. He was candid about his battles with substance addiction, alcoholism, and mental health, and he appeared on “Dr. Phil” to discuss those struggles.

His legal history included several arrests over the years. In 2014, he was detained after an alcohol-fueled incident at an Idaho hotel. In 2021, he faced felony prescription fraud charges in Indiana, with a plea agreement reached in 2022.

Despite these difficulties, his family highlighted his upbeat spirit. “He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was,” they said.

The family shared that Brendon had recently taken up painting and visual art, enthusiastically sharing his creations with relatives, friends, and fans.

They told The Hollywood Reporter that although he had struggled previously, he was receiving medication and treatment for his condition and “was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”

Brendon is the second member of the “Buffy” cast to die in recent years, following Michelle Trachtenberg, who portrayed Dawn Summers and died in February 2025 at 39 from complications related to diabetes.

The family closed their statement with a plea for privacy: “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.”
