In a tragic incident, Rebecca Rauber, a 28-year-old elementary school teacher, was found deceased and buried in snow in a forested area of Emporia, Kansas, on January 25, 2026. Her death followed her disappearance during a harsh winter storm that brought dangerous cold and significant snowfall to the area.

Rauber’s body was found roughly 300 yards south of West 4th Avenue, close to where the last recorded surveillance footage showed her walking alone late on January 23, 2026. K-9 Daisy from K-9 Search and Rescue Kansas discovered the body as part of a thorough search operation involving several law enforcement agencies.

Emporia Police Chief Edward Owens confirmed the unfortunate find to the press. “Not the outcome that we had all hoped and prayed for, but our thoughts and prayers are with that family,” Owens said. “Just wish we could have found her a little sooner.”

Law enforcement officials suspect that Rauber died from hypothermia soon after her disappearance. She likely succumbed to the cold in the first few hours after leaving the Town Royal bar on foot without her purse, phone, or jacket. She was last seen exiting the bar at 405 Commercial Street around 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

Review of surveillance footage provided crucial information about Rauber’s movements. The video recorded her walking west on West 5th Avenue and then proceeding north on Neosho Street from West 5th Avenue at approximately 11:37 p.m. on Friday, January 23. Further video discovered during the investigation showed Rauber in the 700 block of West 4th Avenue around 11:44 p.m. on the same night.

The search for Rauber started as soon as she was reported missing. The Emporia Police Department used business surveillance cameras across the downtown area and collaborated with the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Rauber’s disappearance coincided with a severe snowstorm that hit the area on Saturday, January 24, causing perilous conditions. Temperatures dropped to 3 degrees with wind chills hitting minus 13, posing a severe risk of exposure to anyone caught outside without adequate protection.

The probe into Rauber’s death is ongoing, with an autopsy scheduled to confirm the official cause and a more precise time of death. Rauber’s family has been informed of the discovery.

Rauber was a second-grade teacher at Riverside Elementary in the USD 253 Emporia Public Schools district. She had recently earned a master’s degree from Emporia State University in the spring of 2025 and held two bachelor’s degrees from the same institution in 2020.

The school district issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “Counselors will be available for students and staff as the school community processes the tragedy,” the statement read.

The Emporia Police Department thanked the multiple agencies that contributed significant manpower and resources to the search operation. The coordinated effort included ground searches, K-9 units, and a systematic review of surveillance footage from businesses and residences throughout the search area.

The fact that Rauber left the bar without essential items such as her phone and jacket raises questions about her state of mind and decision-making at the time.

Surveillance footage played a crucial role in piecing together Rauber’s final movements, allowing investigators to focus their search area. Modern investigations frequently rely on such video from both commercial establishments and private homes equipped with security cameras. Police had asked residents to check their home surveillance systems for any footage from Friday night.

The Town Royal bar is located on the 400 block of Commercial Street. The forested area where Rauber was found is just south of this location, a place that may have provided some shelter from the wind but also isolated her from potential help.

As the investigation continues, authorities will aim to establish a complete timeline of events and ascertain if any additional factors contributed to the tragedy. The autopsy results will medically confirm the cause of death and help determine when Rauber succumbed to the extreme cold.
