On the anniversary of President Trump’s return to the White House, Melania Trump reflected on her second term as first lady, viewing it as a significant responsibility.
“This day, a year ago, I was once again given the honor to serve our nation,” she stated in a post on X on January 20. She added that being the first lady is not only an honor but also a crucial duty. A video was released highlighting her activities on Inauguration Day last year, which included her husband’s swearing-in ceremony, a lunch and prayer service at the Capitol, a parade, and three inaugural balls.
The 55-year-old first lady underscored her optimistic message while promoting her upcoming documentary “Melania,” produced by Amazon MGM Studios, set for theatrical release on January 30. “As we continue on this journey together … we must remember that hope is a powerful force, and that our vision to create a brighter future for all is within reach,” she expressed.
She had previously mentioned to Fox News that her first experience as first lady had been challenging due to a lack of necessary information. However, this time around, she indicated that she was better prepared, having already chosen the furniture, making the transition significantly different.
Melania has adopted an unorthodox approach in her second term as first lady, splitting her time between the White House, Trump Tower in New York City, and Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. Reports suggest that she spent fewer than 14 days at the White House in the first 100 days following the January 20, 2025, inauguration.
The limited presence of the first lady at the White House was accompanied by a significantly reduced operation. As of July 2025, her office employed only five full-time staff members, a significant drop from the traditional first lady operations. This reduction mirrored a broader shift in how Melania Trump chose to fulfill her duties.
In another departure from the norm, the East Wing of the White House was demolished to accommodate a massive 90,000-square-foot ballroom commissioned by the president. This led to the displacement of the traditional Office of the First Lady, which was relocated to rooms within the Executive Mansion, including the Vermeil Room, South Mezzanine, Library, and China Room.
Despite her limited time in Washington, D.C., Melania Trump maintained a visible schedule of official appearances. She was present at the National Day of Prayer Service on January 21, 2025, at Washington National Cathedral with the president. A few days later, she accompanied President Trump to assess wildfire damage in Los Angeles, California, and Hurricane Helene destruction in North Carolina.
The first lady took part in traditional White House events, including hosting the National Governors Association dinner on February 22, 2025. She also engaged in policy matters by participating in a TAKE IT DOWN Act roundtable focusing on legislation to combat revenge pornography and non-consensual intimate imagery online.
Her spring calendar included presenting awards at the International Women of Courage Awards on April 1, 2025, with Marco Rubio. On April 26, 2025, she traveled to Vatican City to attend the papal funeral in Rome, representing the United States at the solemn international event.
Melania Trump’s influence also extended into policy areas. She wrote a peace letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 16, 2025, which was personally delivered by President Trump at their summit in Alaska. Putin read the letter in the presence of both American and Russian delegations during the significant meeting.
The first lady also showed her policy engagement through advocacy on humanitarian issues. She reportedly influenced President Trump’s stance on Gaza concerns and shaped his skepticism about Putin regarding Ukraine.
Her international engagements continued with a state visit to Britain on September 17-18, 2025, which included time at Windsor Castle. These diplomatic appearances highlighted her continued representation of the United States abroad despite her limited White House residency.
Melania has also maintained a focus on technology and education policy. She participated in an AI education task force meeting, demonstrating continued engagement with emerging policy challenges facing American families and children.
The first lady’s approach to her role represents a departure from traditional expectations. Her decision to maintain residence in Mar-a-lago reflects a modern interpretation of the position, one that balances personal preferences with official obligations.
Despite her reduced presence in Washington, Melania Trump has balanced her duties by making strategic appearances at key events. Her participation in ceremonial occasions from the Easter Egg Roll to international diplomatic visits has maintained visibility for the Office of the First Lady even as its physical footprint and staffing have diminished.
