Former ‘Tonight Show’ host Jay Leno has opened up about his experiences as the primary caregiver for his wife, Mavis, who suffers from advanced dementia. He expressed surprise at the shock expressed by some in Hollywood at his dedication to his wife.

During an interview on Maria Shriver’s ‘Life Above the Noise’ podcast on January 11, 2026, the 75-year-old comedian, married to Mavis, 79, since 1980, revealed that some people were taken aback that he had stayed true to his marriage vows, particularly the promise to stand by his wife in sickness and in health.

Leno announced in 2024 that Mavis had been diagnosed with dementia. Since the diagnosis, he has adjusted his professional life to ensure that he can provide the necessary care for his wife. The comedian now only takes on jobs that allow him to be home the same day, a significant shift from his previously active stand-up comedy schedule.

Leno, reflecting on Hollywood’s attitude towards his situation, recalled a suggestion that he get a girlfriend as an illustration of the industry’s mindset. He dismissed the idea, emphasizing his 45-year marriage to Mavis and their commitment to facing her illness together.

Despite the challenges, Leno acknowledges his advantageous position compared to many other caregivers. He can afford professional help when required and has the flexibility to return home by 6 p.m. to make dinner. He expressed understanding for those who juggle caregiving duties with demanding jobs, acknowledging that his financial capacity provides him with flexibility not available to others.

“I’m glad I’m passing the test,” said Leno, describing his caregiving experience as a responsibility rather than a sacrifice. He believes that looking after a sick loved one is the right thing to do.

Leno noted the societal shift where loyalty and commitment are now surprising to many, whereas faltering on such commitments, once considered inappropriate, has become quite commonplace.

In January 2024, Leno filed for conservatorship over Mavis’s estate due to her inability to manage estate planning due to significant neurocognitive disorders, including dementia. This legal step was taken to ensure the proper handling of her affairs. The conservatorship was granted on April 9, 2024

Mavis Leno, beyond being the wife of a television icon, has a distinguished legacy of her own. In 2002, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy work supporting women under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, bringing international attention to their plight.

The couple first crossed paths at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, California, in the 1970s, and their relationship has now spanned over four decades. They decided not to have children, instead focusing on their careers and shared interests.

Leno aspires to use the attention on his situation to highlight the work of the estimated 50 to 60 million other caregivers. He believes these individuals deserve recognition for the arduous task they undertake, often while managing other responsibilities and with far fewer financial resources.

Leno’s openness about his caregiving role contributes to a wider discussion about family responsibility, marriage commitments, and the realities of caring for relatives with dementia and other conditions.

Dementia, a progressive disease that impairs memory, thinking, and daily activity performance, can lead to significant personality and cognitive changes when advanced, as in Mavis’s case.

Leno’s perspective, viewing caregiving as a responsibility rather than a sacrifice, reflects a traditional view of marriage that he feels has become less common today. His surprise at others’ reactions points to a perceived disconnect between his values and more prevalent attitudes, especially within the entertainment industry.

As Leno continues to juggle his comedy career and caregiving responsibilities, his story underscores the personal nature of such decisions and the broader societal questions around commitment, responsibility, and societal support for those caring for loved ones with serious illnesses.
