Donyelle Denise Wilson, known to many as Donyelle Jones from the popular TV show “So You Think You Can Dance,” passed away on December 2, 2025, at the age of 46. Wilson had been battling breast cancer for nearly a decade.
Wilson’s family announced her death on her Instagram account, where she had been sharing health updates for several years. The post described Wilson as a wife, daughter, sister, friend, and warrior, stating her spirit never waned and she maintained her smile even in the face of adversity.
Wilson’s cancer journey began in 2016 when doctors diagnosed her with Stage 3C breast cancer. The disease later progressed to Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Despite her illness, Wilson continued her dancing and professional commitments throughout her treatment.
She gained fame in 2006 when she was a contestant in the second season of “So You Think You Can Dance.” She was applauded for her hip-hop and jazz dancing skills and finished third in the competition. Her performances on the show propelled her professional dancing career. Benji Schwimmer, her dance partner on the show and the season winner, posted a heartfelt tribute after her passing.
Post-show, Wilson continued her career as a professional dancer, appearing in the film “Spirited” with Ryan Reynolds and performing with pop icon Janet Jackson. Notably, she secured the job with Jackson just three months after completing chemotherapy. Her resilience in the face of her illness was lauded by many, including her cousin, singer-songwriter Shanice, and actress Yvette Nicole Brown.
Wilson was married to Tahir Wilson for 13 years and maintained close relationships with other dancers from “So You Think You Can Dance,” including Stephen “tWitch” Boss, who passed away in 2022. She also took part in Kanye West’s Sunday Service events in 2019, finding solace in worship during her illness.
In 2025, Wilson resumed teaching dance classes, describing it as a personal birthday gift. However, her health deteriorated in the weeks leading to her death. She shared with her followers that she had begun preparing for the end and had “surrendered to whatever God’s will is” as her liver failed. She was admitted to hospice care during her last days.
