A former television news anchor was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing her 80-year-old mother to death on the morning of Friday, October 31, 2025, in what neighbors described as a blood-soaked scene that shattered the quiet of their Wichita, Kansas neighborhood.

Angelynn “Angie” Mock, 47, was taken into custody after police responded to a “reported cutting” at approximately 7:52 a.m. at a residence on Wichita’s South Side. Officers arriving at the scene found Mock standing outside the home with cuts on her hands. Inside, they discovered her mother, Anita Avers, unresponsive in bed with multiple stab wounds.

Avers, a marriage and family therapist at Wichita Counseling Professionals, was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead at 8:26 a.m., according to Sedgwick County police records.

The incident unfolded in a dramatic fashion that left neighbors shaken. Alyssa Castro, who lives in the neighborhood, encountered Mock in a blood-covered state near her vehicle. “There was a woman who approached our vehicle with blood, like her hands were filled, her body was filled with blood, asking to call 911,” Castro told local media.

According to reports, Mock took Castro’s boyfriend’s phone and ran back inside the residence, where she contacted emergency dispatchers. During the 911 call, Mock allegedly told dispatchers she had stabbed her mother to save herself, according to information relayed by Sedgwick County dispatchers to local news outlets.

Castro later reflected on the traumatic encounter, noting that Mock appeared scared and shaken. The neighbor expressed relief that she and her boyfriend were able to assist in getting help, though the circumstances left the community deeply disturbed.

Mock was treated at a hospital for her injuries before being booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on charges of first-degree murder.

Mock’s background in broadcast journalism has drawn considerable attention to the case. She worked as a morning news anchor at KTVI Fox 2 in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015, where she also filled in for evening broadcasts. Her television career also included positions at KOKH Fox 25 in Oklahoma City.

After leaving the broadcast industry, Mock transitioned into sales roles. She worked in various positions in St. Louis through August 2017 before taking a two-year break from the workforce. At the time of her arrest, she was employed in sales at a data management software company with multiple offices throughout the Midwest, including one in Wichita, according to her LinkedIn profile.

The Halloween morning incident occurred at the home Mock shared with her mother. Avers had established a career as a marriage and family therapist, working at Wichita Counseling Professionals. Her husband confirmed her professional affiliation with the counseling practice to local media outlets.

The shocking nature of the crime, combined with Mock’s previous public profile as a television personality, has generated significant attention both locally and nationally. The case marks a stark departure from Mock’s years in the public eye as a trusted morning news anchor in major Midwest markets.

Castro and her boyfriend eventually retrieved his phone from authorities after it was used to contact emergency services. Despite the traumatic nature of what they witnessed, Castro emphasized her focus on being able to help during a crisis.

In November, a probable cause affidavit revealed disturbing details about Mock’s mental health history and the circumstances surrounding the stabbing. According to the court document, Mock’s stepfather told police she had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and experienced “bouts of delusions mixed with periods of depression,” including episodes where she claimed family members were “robots” and “not real people.”

Mock told investigators she went to her mother’s bedroom to discuss an upcoming job interview with a Wichita news station when she allegedly saw her mother sharpening knives. She claimed Avers chased her around the house and that she believed her mother was going to kill her, stating “I had to kill her, she wasn’t going to stop.”

The affidavit noted Mock’s account changed during questioning, initially saying she stabbed first before later claiming her mother stabbed first.

On November 14, Judge Jeffrey Goering ordered Mock to undergo a competency evaluation to determine if she is fit to stand trial, a process that typically takes 60 days to complete. Her preliminary hearing was taken off the docket pending the results of the mental health evaluation.

Mock remains held on $1 million bond at the Sedgwick County Jail.
