CBS Network in Turmoil: Stars Face Brutal Purge

Network sources have disclosed that Tom Cibrowski, the new president of CBS News, is planning notable changes to the “Evening News” broadcast format, with discussions underway about reducing the current dual-anchor setup.

Industry insiders indicate that Cibrowski’s plans could lead to either John Dickerson or Maurice DuBois stepping down from their roles as co-anchors.

The proposed changes arise as CBS grapples with the competitive dynamics of the evening news sector. Since the dual-anchor system was implemented this year, both Dickerson and DuBois have brought unique strengths and viewership appeal to the program.

Dickerson, who has a history with CBS News as a “Face the Nation” host and correspondent, joined the “Evening News” as part of strategic programming shifts. DuBois transitioned to the national broadcast after establishing himself as a key anchor at WCBS-TV in New York, New York.

The potential elimination of one anchor role aligns with broader industry trends toward more focused news formats and cost-efficiency measures. Networks have been experimenting with varied anchor configurations to optimize production costs and audience engagement.

According to sources, Cibrowski is reviewing multiple facets of the broadcast’s performance and structure. The contemplated changes may extend beyond anchor roles, affecting other elements of the format and presentation.

Since its debut on January 27 with Dickerson and DuBois, the program’s ratings have shown a decline, Nielsen data reveals. The show initially attracted 5.2 million viewers but averaged 4.8 million in its first week.

During its second week, the broadcast experienced a decrease of about 300,000 viewers, and by the week ending February 16, it drew just under 4.5 million total viewers, according to the data.

A source close to CBS News commented that the decline in viewership was “not a surprise.”

“When there is an anchor change, traditionally there is a dip in ratings,” the source said.

Analysts note that evening news shows face mounting challenges to remain relevant and maintain viewership amid a transforming media landscape. Traditional networks compete with cable, streaming, and digital platforms for audience attention.

The timing of these potential changes coincides with shifts in viewer preferences. Networks frequently reassess programming strategies to align with evolving demographics and media consumption, particularly as younger audiences increasingly favor digital news sources.

CBS News and representatives for Dickerson and DuBois have not issued official comments on the reported modifications. The network has historically reserved comments on internal programming decisions until official announcements are made.

The dual-anchor format has been utilized by various news outlets to provide diverse perspectives and appeal to wider audiences. However, some industry experts suggest that single-anchor formats may offer a stronger brand identity and editorial clarity for evening news programs.

Production considerations also influence decisions on anchor configurations. Single-anchor formats generally require fewer resources and can streamline editorial processes, while dual-anchor setups allow greater flexibility in story presentation and coverage.

The potential restructuring comes as CBS News competes in the evening news ratings race with NBC Nightly News and ABC World News Tonight. Each network continually adjusts its programming strategies to sustain or improve market positions.

Earlier this year, veteran anchor Jeff Glor was released amid budget cuts at Paramount Global, having co-hosted “CBS Saturday Morning” since 2019 and previously leading “CBS Evening News.” His departure was part of a broader downsizing affecting several correspondents, including Anna Werner, Roxana Saberi, and senior investigative reporter Catherine Herridge, among approximately 20 CBS staffers laid off during February’s consolidation.

In mid-May, CBS News quietly eliminated three long-time leadership positions: Andre Rodriguez (North Bureau Chief), Maryhelen Campa (Southern Region Bureau Chief), and Chad Cross, Senior VP of Beats & Enterprise. These changes were part of a centralization directive prompted by financial pressures and an ongoing merger with Skydance.
