Basketball Player Killed in ATV Wreck

Cameron Woodall, a 26-year-old former college basketball player who helped lead Raymond High School to back-to-back state championships, died in an ATV accident on June 7 in Raymond, Mississippi. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Midway Road when Woodall lost control of his four-wheeler and collided with another ATV rider.

Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard confirmed that Woodall died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. According to family members, a tire blew out on Woodall’s ATV, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The second rider involved in the collision was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Emergency responders from AMR, the Byram Volunteer Fire Department, the Raymond Volunteer Fire Department, and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene. The sheriff’s office is leading the ongoing investigation into the accident.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones expressed his condolences, stating that his heart goes out to Woodall’s family, friends, and the Raymond High School basketball community. The sheriff emphasized the impact Woodall had on the local basketball program and community.

Woodall was a standout basketball player who achieved significant success at Raymond High School. The 6-foot-6 forward helped lead the Rangers to MHSAA Class 4A state championships in both 2017 and 2018. His high school coach, Tony Tadlock, reflected on their relationship, indicating that while many people suggested Woodall needed guidance, he felt he actually needed Woodall more than Woodall needed him.

Following his successful high school career, Woodall continued his basketball journey at the collegiate level. He first attended Copiah-Lincoln Community College before transferring to Grambling State and later finishing his college career at Tougaloo College during the 2022-23 season. During his time at Tougaloo, Woodall averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per game in the 2021-22 season and earned Second Team All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference honors twice.

Woodall’s basketball aspirations extended beyond college, as he played professional basketball in Peru. During his high school years, he expressed his dream of reaching the NBA and using his potential earnings to give back to his community by building gyms and providing opportunities for young people to showcase their talents.

Tougaloo College athletics released a statement honoring their former player. The institution described Woodall as known for his larger-than-life presence, fierce competitiveness on the court, and kind-hearted spirit off it. The college noted that he left an indelible mark on the Tougaloo family and that his impact extended far beyond basketball.

The athletic department characterized Woodall as a friend, a brother, and a true Bulldog through and through. They extended their deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Woodall’s mother, Camelia Bracey, spoke about her grief following the loss of her son. She acknowledged her struggle with the tragedy but emphasized her determination to remain strong, as she had always taught Woodall to be resilient. Bracey shared that she copes by imagining her son playing basketball somewhere, which helps her continue forward.

Family members and friends knew Woodall by the nickname “Big Cam” and some referred to him as “Superman,” not because he was invincible, but because he was unforgettable. His brother Jaylin reflected on their relationship, noting that despite Cameron’s larger physical presence, he never treated him like a little brother.

Tougaloo College announced plans for a memorial service for Woodall on Thursday, June 12, at 6 p.m. at Woodworth Chapel on the Jackson campus. The service will also be available via livestream. Funeral arrangements are tentatively scheduled for Saturday, though specific details had not been finalized at the time of reporting.

Due to the tragedy and planned memorial services, a Tougaloo men’s basketball identification camp that had been scheduled for Saturday at the Jackson Street Gym in Vicksburg was postponed indefinitely. Woodall’s favorite color was red, according to his family.
