Beloved News Anchor Dies at 69

British Columbia’s broadcasting sector is grieving the death of Dianne June Newman, a long-serving radio personality, who passed away on April 1, 2025, at Vancouver General Hospital in Canada. She was 69 years old.

Newman, recognized for her composed demeanor and articulate delivery, was well-known across the province. She died with “peace, dignity, and grace,” according to her family, after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Her family noted in her obituary that she chose to end her life peacefully rather than extend a situation deemed hopeless.

For nearly 20 years, Newman was a vital presence at CKWX in Vancouver, British Columbia, including 15 years as a key figure on the morning and midday segments of 1130 NewsRadio, previously known as News1130. She joined the station in 1996, helping to establish its all-news format, which became a reliable source for commuters and news followers throughout the province.

“She was a shining light and a mentor,” said one former colleague. “Serious, talented, and loved what she did.”

Newman’s broadcasting career started at Mountain FM, where she reported on the Squamish and Whistler regions north of Vancouver. She later moved to 1040 KICKS in Vancouver, continuing to develop the clear and informative delivery style that became her hallmark.

Colleagues at News1130 remembered Newman as a dedicated professional who carefully prepared her broadcasts, bringing intellectual rigor and a steadfast commitment to unbiased reporting. Her journalistic approach earned her respect among both colleagues and listeners during her 19.5-year tenure with Rogers Broadcasting.

After leaving News1130 in 2011, Newman transitioned to a role as a narrator for Descriptive Video Works, where she provided detailed audio descriptions of films and TV shows for individuals with visual impairments. Her colleagues commended her clear articulation and ability to convey visual content effectively.

Born in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Newman maintained connections throughout the province while building her career. She lived and worked in several Canadian cities, including Toronto and Squamish, before settling in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood with her long-term partner, Brad Copeland.

Outside of broadcasting, Newman was a musician with the group Groove Therapy, performing at senior centers, veterans’ homes, and the Point Grey Legion 142 in Kitsilano. Her musical partner Jessie often joined her, making these performances a significant part of her life outside of her broadcasting career.

Newman was also known for her hospitality, frequently welcoming friends and family into her home with freshly baked bread, hearty meals, and handmade preserves. Her partner Brad noted that she enjoyed sharing her culinary skills as much as she did sharing news.

Her curiosity extended beyond her professional life. Newman was an enthusiastic traveler, exploring Canada with Copeland and visiting destinations in Australia, Asia, and Mexico. Her obituary highlighted her enthusiasm and attention to detail in travel, reflecting her broadcasting career.

The couple shared over 30 years together, a partnership remembered by family as filled with love, laughter, and dancing in the kitchen. Copeland and Newman built a life centered around community and creativity.

Newman’s contributions to Canadian broadcasting extended beyond the microphone. In 1987, she was recognized by the BC Drama Association for her performance as “Pearl” in the one-act play “Patio” by Jack Heifner, showcasing her talent in dramatic performance.

She is survived by her partner Brad Copeland, five siblings, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her presence deeply.

A celebration of Newman’s life will take place on June 1 at 1 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 142 in Vancouver’s West Point Grey neighborhood, a venue where she often performed with her band.
