Richard Gere Tells All After Fleeing U.S.

Famed Hollywood actor Richard Gere, 75, known for his roles in “Pretty Woman” and “American Gigolo,” has established a new home in Spain, marking a pivotal change in his extensive career. The transition, which was completed in November 2024, followed the sale of Gere and his wife Alejandra Silva’s vast Connecticut estate for $10.75 million. The sale signified the culmination of their long-planned move to Madrid, Spain, Silva’s ancestral homeland.

In their first joint interview since the move with Elle España, Gere expressed their contentment, stating, “We are happier than ever.” He added, “She, because she is at home, and I because, if she is happy, I am happy.”

The couple’s relationship started in 2014 in Italy, following Gere’s separation from Carey Lowell. Their bond was immediate and profound, leading to their marriage in 2018. Silva, 41, explained, “We are like soulmates. We have the same values, we see the world in the same way, and from the first moment, we felt like we have known each other for a long time. And this only happens once, if it happens at all.” She added, “We were united by the karma of our past lives.”

Their family includes two young sons, Alexander, five, and James, four, along with Silva’s 11-year-old son, Albert, from a previous relationship. Gere’s 24-year-old son, Homer, from his marriage with Lowell, remains in the United States to pursue his acting career.

The decision to move to Spain was not made on a whim; it was a carefully considered and planned choice. Gere recognized that Silva had spent almost seven years living in the United States with him. Consequently, they decided it was only fair to spend the next phase of their lives in Silva’s home country, settling in Madrid.

Gere emphasized that the relocation was about balancing family dynamics and providing a conducive environment for their children. He highlighted the importance of their bilingual education and expressed confidence that living in Spain would allow their language skills to thrive in a culture that reflects a part of their lineage.

The move to Spain also aligned with a change in family dynamics after the death of Silva’s grandmother approximately two years ago. Gere shared that his wife has naturally assumed the role of the new matriarch in their extended family and is planning large family Sunday lunches.

While their personal life continues to thrive, the couple has also committed themselves to significant humanitarian work in Spain. They have both joined the board of the non-profit Hogar Sí, an organization dedicated to combating homelessness in Spain. Silva underscored that a primary motivation for their move to Madrid was to support this cause, with a shared goal to ensure that no one in the country is forced to sleep on the streets within five years.

Their daily life in Spain has developed into a comfortable and harmonious routine. Silva described Gere as a devoted and attentive father who enjoys reading stories to their children. She acknowledged that their family moments might appear ideal but insisted that they genuinely reflect his parenting style. Gere typically plays the guitar while Silva prepares meals, as he doesn’t cook.

During the interview, Gere also shared wisdom from his long-time spiritual mentor, the 14th Dalai Lama, about the importance of kindness and its omnipresence. This principle seems to guide their new life in Spain, where they balance family responsibilities with their continuous commitment to humanitarian work.
