Emmy-award recipient and beloved KCAL News anchor, Chauncy Glover, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 39 on Tuesday, November 5, leaving a significant void in the Los Angeles, California community and among his colleagues.
Respected for his compassion, warmth, and commitment to public service, Glover had a profound influence in Los Angeles and beyond.
The sudden demise of Glover was communicated by his family, who portrayed him as “a beacon of light” and a “hero to his community,” beyond just being a son and a brother. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Glover, a native of Athens, Alabama, developed a passion for journalism at an early age. His father built him a mini anchor desk for family newscasts on Sundays. Glover took this passion forward professionally, studying broadcast journalism and theatre at Troy University. His career included stints at stations in Georgia, Florida, Michigan, and Texas.
Joining KCAL News in October 2023, Glover quickly became an integral part of the 5, 8, 10, and 11 p.m. broadcasts, co-anchoring with Pat Harvey and Suzie Suh.
Glover also made substantial contributions through the Chauncy Glover Project (CGP), a mentorship program he founded in 2013. The project, established following the tragic death of a Detroit, Michigan, teenager, focused on empowering young Black and Latino men. CGP covered topics like dressing for success, college readiness, and community service and has mentored over 1,000 students.
At KTRK in Houston, Texas, Glover made history as the station’s first Black male main anchor. He was recognized for his coverage of Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and even delivered a baby during the storm, underlining his dedication to his profession.
Glover’s efforts earned him three Emmy Awards and admiration from the communities he served across the country.
Beyond journalism, Glover was a gifted actor. He performed in national and off-Broadway plays and was privileged to sing at the funeral of civil rights leader Rosa Parks in Montgomery, Alabama. As a motivational speaker, he inspired numerous young people nationwide to pursue their dreams in journalism and other fields.
The National Association of Black Journalists described him as a “kind soul” and “great encourager.” KCAL News and CBS Stations released a statement describing Glover as a “bright light” whose kindness and dedication touched all who knew him.
Glover’s sudden departure has led to an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, mentees, and admirers. His legacy as an accomplished journalist and advocate for positive change will continue to inspire future generations.
