During MSNBC’s live coverage of the 2024 presidential election, liberal commentator Joy Reid expressed strong sentiments as Donald Trump secured a win in Florida. Reid characterized the state as embracing “extremely right-wing fascist” ideals.
Reid voiced her concerns at the early results indicating a substantial lead for Trump in Florida, reflecting the state’s political leaning.
“It’s a pure Project 2025 in miniature in Florida,” Reid noted, insinuating that Florida’s leadership exemplifies a “right-wing, fascist type government”.
The MSNBC anchor underscored Trump’s recent public declarations, particularly his statements on mass deportation and what she referred to as a “violent start to his dictatorship.” She questioned how such discourse could still attract significant voter backing.
With the election results tilting towards Trump on election night, Reid’s apprehensions expanded beyond Florida. Upon Texas being declared in favor of the Republican candidate, she brought up the issue of voter suppression, specifically citing Black voters in Houston, Texas, as “deeply suppressed.”
The media’s reaction to the election results varied widely. While Reid aired her concerns on MSNBC, Fox News commentators applauded Trump’s performance. Fox News was the first main network to predict Trump’s victory, with anchor Bret Baier labeling Trump as the “biggest political phoenix from the ashes” in U.S. political history.
Reid’s remarks led to immediate backlash from Trump supporters, some of whom demanded her removal from the panel.
By Tuesday night, Trump had achieved significant wins in critical states such as Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and Ohio, as well as multiple Southern and Midwestern states. Betting markets estimated Trump’s likelihood of securing the necessary 270 electoral votes at over 90 percent.
By early Wednesday, it was evident that Trump had clinched a decisive victory, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris to recapture the White House, marking a historic political rebound that redefines American politics.
Trump, 78, achieved the necessary 270 electoral votes after winning Wisconsin, signifying a notable return to power almost four years after leaving office. This victory positions him as both the 45th and 47th president of the United States, a unique distinction in American political history.
Vice President Harris gave her concession speech at Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
The election results showed marked shifts in voter demographics, with Trump seeing modest increases among Black, Latino, and young voters relative to previous elections. Economic issues and immigration policy were key factors influencing voter choices in several battleground states.
Trump’s economic policies found particular resonance in Midwestern states, including Michigan, where concerns about inflation and economic stability swayed voter decisions. The election results suggested a significant deviation in traditional voting patterns across various regions.
