Noted actor Tony Todd, known for his towering presence and for portraying the terrifying character in “Candyman,” passed away on November 6, 2024 at his residence in Marina Del Rey, California. He was 69 years old.
Throughout his career of over four decades, Todd amassed more than 240 credits in film and television, showcasing his acting prowess across various genres. His towering height of 6 feet 5 inches added a unique depth to his roles, ranging from horror to science fiction and theater.
Virginia Madsen, Todd’s co-star in “Candyman,” shared a heartfelt tribute to him on Instagram: ”The great actor Tony Todd has left us and now is an angel. As he was in life. More later but I can’t right now. I love you.”
Todd was born in Washington, D.C. and brought up in Hartford, Connecticut. He sharpened his acting skills at the University of Connecticut and the Eugene O’Neill National Theatre Institute. His commitment to theater was evident throughout his career, with notable achievements such as originating the title role in August Wilson’s “King Hedley II.”
He achieved his breakout role as the supernatural murderer in 1992’s “Candyman,” a character he reprised in several sequels, including “Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh,” “Candyman: Day of the Dead,” and a cameo in the 2021 revival. Despite his intimidating physical stature and often chilling on-screen roles, Todd was remembered by his peers for his warm laughter and generous nature. He mentored young actors and campaigned for increased representation in the film industry.
Todd continued to work until his last days, and his final acting appearance will be a posthumous role as William Bludworth in “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” set for release in 2025. He is survived by his two children, Alex and Ariana.
