On Monday, November 4, 2024, a Saint Francis University football player was discovered dead in his dorm room. The 18-year-old was found in Giles Hall, located in Loretto, Pennsylvania, as confirmed by university officials.
The deceased, Kevon Walker, was a freshman defensive lineman hailing from Buffalo, New York. He was found unresponsive in his bed by his teammates, as reported by Joseph Hribar, the Chief Deputy Coroner for Cambria County. The authorities stated that there was no evidence suggesting foul play.
Prior to his death, Walker’s teammates had noted that he had been feeling unwell, but it is undetermined whether this was related to his sudden passing. The coroner’s office, however, has not provided any comments on this matter.
The Pennsylvania State Police, in conjunction with the Cambria County Coroner’s Office, are currently investigating Walker’s death. The officials are waiting for the toxicology and pathology reports to establish the cause and manner of death.
The Athletics department of Saint Francis University expressed their grief, stating, “Although his time at the university was short, he had a positive impact on the football program, was well-liked and respected among the team, and showed the promise of a very bright future with the Red Flash.”
Saint Francis University, situated approximately 80 miles to the east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, canceled classes the following day to give students and staff the opportunity to process the tragic news. Counseling services were provided to those affected by Walker’s sudden demise.
Walker’s death has led to an outpouring of tributes from his relatives, friends, and former coaches and teammates. Paul R. Woods Sr., Walker’s high school football coach from Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York expressed his grief on X, sharing his deep sadness over the news and urging everyone to keep the family and school community in their thoughts and prayers.
Walker left a “larger-than-life presence” at Canisius High School, and during his brief stint as a college football player, he recorded two tackles across three games for the Red Flash, as remembered by his former school.
