The broadcasting community in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania mourns the loss of the esteemed broadcaster, Wally Kennedy, who passed away on October 30, 2024, at the age of 76. For over two decades, Kennedy’s unique voice and adept interviewing abilities made him a cherished fixture on local television.
As reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, Kennedy succumbed to lung cancer.
Kennedy’s 20-year stint at WPVI-TV (6abc) in Philadelphia included hosting several popular shows such as “AM Philadelphia,” “AM Live,” and “Philly After Midnight.” Kennedy’s programs consistently achieved high Nielsen ratings in their time slots.
6abc President and General Manager, Bernie Prazenica, praised Kennedy’s on-air charisma, stating, “Wally had a very distinctive voice and one that was unusually strong and easily remembered.”
Kennedy showcased his versatility by interviewing a wide range of celebrities, from comedian Rosie O’Donnell and actor John Ritter to Prince Albert of Monaco. His coverage spanned from entertainment and true crime to the social scene in Philadelphia.
Before his career in Philadelphia, the Chicago, Illinois native and Columbia College Chicago graduate worked in multiple markets including Flint, Michigan, and Atlanta, Georgia at WSB Radio. He started his Philadelphia broadcasting journey in 1981 at WCAU radio before transitioning to WPVI-TV.
Following his departure from 6abc in 2004, Kennedy continued his broadcasting journey at KYW NewsRadio until 2019. He also imparted his knowledge and experience to budding journalists as an adjunct professor at Temple University’s School of Journalism and Immaculata University.
In 2011, Kennedy’s significant contributions to local media were recognized, and he was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame. After retirement, Kennedy spent his time studying World War II history, enjoying classic films, and reading to his granddaughter.
Kennedy leaves behind his wife Glendia and their three children.
