Noted British actor Timothy West passed away in his sleep on November 12, 2024, according to his family. West, a seasoned performer whose career spanned 70 years in stage, television, and film, was 90 at the time of his death.
West’s children, Juliet, Samuel, and Joseph West, made the announcement of their father’s passing. “After a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage, our darling father, Timothy West, died peacefully in his sleep yesterday evening,” their statement said. They also expressed their gratitude towards the NHS staff at St George’s Hospital in Tooting and Avery Wandsworth for their support during his final days.
West was born on October 20, 1934, in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of actors Lockwood West and Olive Carleton-Crowe, continuing their theatrical legacy. West’s professional career started as an assistant stage manager at the Wimbledon Theatre, later establishing himself as a significant figure in British theater.
During the 1960s, West’s affiliation with the Royal Shakespeare Company marked a pivotal phase in his career. He delivered unforgettable performances as Macbeth and King Lear. His commanding stage presence earned him numerous acclaimed roles, including portrayals of Falstaff and Willy Loman in regional theaters throughout the United Kingdom.
West showcased his remarkable adaptability on screen, featuring in significant films such as “The Day of the Jackal” (1973), “Cry Freedom” (1987), and “Iris” (2001). His television career included memorable roles as Commissioner Berthier and appearances in popular series like “Coronation Street” and “EastEnders.” Importantly, West portrayed Winston Churchill three times during his career, highlighting his capacity to represent intricate historical personalities.
In recent years, West delighted audiences with his wife of 61 years, actress Prunella Scales, in the Channel 4 series “Great Canal Journeys.” His final television role was in “Gentlemen Jack,” where he depicted Jeremy Lister from 2019 to 2022.
Tracy-Ann Oberman, a former “EastEnders” co-star, recalled West as a remarkable actor and person. The Royal Shakespeare Company also shared their condolences, recognizing their connection to West’s son Samuel, who is an Associate Artist with the company.
In 1984, West was honored with the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his contributions to British drama. He also received honorary doctorates from six universities, recognizing his significant influence on British theater and entertainment.
He is survived by his wife Prunella Scales, sister Patricia, daughter Juliet, sons Samuel and Joseph, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. West and Scales had moved from their family home in Wandsworth, where they had resided for 50 years, before his death.
