A violent episode unfolded at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, China, on the evening of November 16, 2024. A 21-year-old former student, known only by his last name, Xu, initiated a stabbing rampage, resulting in eight fatalities and 17 injuries. The local police stated that the assault began approximately at 6:30 p.m. and concluded with Xu’s capture at the crime scene.
Xu, who had previously failed his examinations, was unable to graduate from the institute, a factor that reportedly led to his mounting frustration and subsequent violent outburst. Xu had also shown discontentment with his internship compensation. The attack, which transpired within the campus, incited fear and disorder among the students and faculty. Emergency services arrived promptly, securing the scene and providing medical assistance to the wounded.
While the identities of the victims have not been disclosed by law enforcement officials as they are still informing their families, the injured were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment. Some remain in a critical state. Psychological support is being provided to students and staff traumatized by the violent event.
This episode is the latest in a string of violent incidents in China, including an event on November 11, when an SUV was driven into a crowd outside a sports stadium in Zhuhai, causing 35 deaths and 43 injuries.
These assaults have stirred public anxiety about the safety of public spaces and led to questions about the societal issues possibly driving these acts of violence. President Xi Jinping has responded by advocating for enhanced alertness and addressing root social issues to avert such disasters. The Ministry of Public Security has vowed to fortify preventive measures and resolve conflicts at the grassroots level.
There have been several attacks in Chinese schools and other educational facilities in recent years. In 2010, an attack on a school in Fujian province resulted in eight children’s deaths and five injuries, prompting significant reforms in school security and increased awareness of mental health.
In response to these attacks, many Chinese schools have introduced security measures such as metal detectors, security personnel deployment, and mandatory ID checks. However, the recurrence of such violent incidents raises questions about the efficacy of these measures.
