Esteemed soap opera actor Ron Hale, recognized for his performances in “General Hospital” and “Ryan’s Hope,” died at the age of 78 on August 27, 2024 in his St. George, South Carolina residence. Born Ronald Hale Thigpen, he charmed daytime TV viewers for over 40 years, delivering some of soap opera’s most unforgettable performances.

Beginning his acting journey in 1968 with a small part on “N.Y.P.D.,” Hale eventually landed his breakthrough role as Dr. Roger Coleridge on “Ryan’s Hope.” Over the span of 900 episodes, he portrayed the multifaceted and at times, unscrupulous Dr. Coleridge, a character deeply rooted in a wealthy family laden with its own drama.

Hale was a wonderful person and will be dearly missed, his niece Lori Brown stated. She further noted that Hale’s persona, both on-set and off, was truly unforgettable.

Hale later joined the “General Hospital” cast, portraying Mike Corbin, the distant father of mob boss Sonny Corinthos, from 1995 until his 2010 retirement. In an official statement, the show’s cast and crew expressed their condolences, acknowledging Hale as an extraordinary actor and unforgettable colleague.

In addition to his extensive TV work, Hale was seen in several films, including the political thriller “All the President’s Men,” where he played Frank Sturgis, one of the Watergate burglars. The role allowed him to work alongside renowned actors Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford. Hale was universally lauded as a versatile actor, adept at portraying both heroic and villainous characters.

Not limiting himself to the small screen, Hale was a frequent performer at the Trustus Theatre in Columbia, South Carolina, co-founded by his brother, Jim Thigpen. Hale took immense pride in supporting his brother’s theater and participated in various productions.

Hale’s career was marked by numerous accolades, including two Daytime Emmy nominations for his portrayal of Dr. Coleridge. His magnetic on-screen presence and commitment to his craft had a lasting impact on his colleagues.

Billy Warlock, a former co-star of Hale on “General Hospital,” expressed his deep grief on social media, mourning the loss of a remarkable talent and a dear friend. Warlock shared his sorrow at losing someone as exceptional as Hale, acknowledging not only Hale’s remarkable acting abilities but also their deep friendship. He stated that Hale’s absence would be deeply felt, both personally and professionally.

Hale leaves behind his nieces and nephews: Lori Brown, Max Brabham, Erin Wilson, and Marc Brown, who remember him as a kind and supportive uncle. His family remarked that, despite his celebrity status, he always remained humble and was loved by those who knew him.
