On Wednesday, October 9th, 2024, a deadly encounter with a pack of pit bulls in Albany, New York, claimed the life of a 59-year-old man.

The victim, identified as James Provost of Schenectady, was subjected to a ferocious attack by eight to nine dogs in a Central Avenue backyard, according to police reports. The assault, which happened around 6 p.m., left Provost with grave injuries, leading to his death at the scene.

Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins characterized the attack as “brutal and vicious.” Officers arrived within minutes upon receiving reports of the incident, only to find the dogs still attacking Provost, who had already collapsed. One officer fired his gun, killing one of the adult dogs, an action that led the remaining dogs to scatter. Shortly after the incident, the dogs’ caretaker arrived and rounded up the surviving dogs.

The dogs were residents of a nearby property, but their owner was not present at the time of the attack. The police are now examining whether they should press criminal charges against the owner or the caretaker. Upon investigation, officers found 24 pit bulls at the property, including 15 puppies. The adult dogs involved in the attack are now in the custody of Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, while the investigation is ongoing. The fate of these dogs, whether they will be released or euthanized, is yet to be determined by the Albany Police Department.

The residence had already come under scrutiny in May 2024 for suspected drug activity, during which several dogs were seized. Despite the investigation not being primarily dog-related, the confiscated dogs were later returned to the owner. This past incident raises concerns about the living conditions of the dogs and their involvement in the fatal attack.

Provost’s screams for help amid the aggressive barking of the dogs were heard by the witnesses. Some locals recorded portions of the incident and shared them with local media, illustrating the gruesome nature of the attack and the challenges faced by the police while responding.

Most of the involved dogs were pit bulls, which were not properly licensed. Of the nine adult dogs found at the scene, four had expired licenses. The city law mandates annual dog registration, yet no prior complaints or reports about the animals at the residence were made before the attack.

The fatal incident is part of a concerning pattern of dog attacks in the USA. Data from the American Animal Hospital Association indicates that pit bulls account for 22.5% of dog bites in several studies. Each year, about 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs nationwide, with an estimated 50 of these attacks leading to fatalities.
