A fatal shooting took place at Joppatowne High School in Joppa, Maryland on Friday, September 6, 2024, resulting in the death of a 15-year-old student. The deceased, Warren Curtis Grant, was shot during a dispute in one of the school’s first-floor boys’ bathrooms.

The incident took place during school hours when a disagreement between Grant and a 16-year-old classmate, Jaylen Prince, escalated. Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler noted that this incident occurred on the first day that Prince attended school, even though it was the fourth day of the new school year, as reported.

Only minutes elapsed during the shooting, marked by a single gunshot. Prince escaped from the school immediately following the incident. Several individuals promptly moved Grant from the scene, while school nurses provided immediate medical care until the arrival of emergency services.

Emergency teams transported Grant to a nearby hospital where medical staff tried to save him. Despite their best efforts, Grant succumbed to his injuries.

Police apprehended Prince shortly after the shooting. However, due to Prince’s age, legal restrictions prevented the authorities from questioning him directly. Sheriff Gahler clarified this, explaining that they were not allowed to speak with the underage suspect.

Prince, who is being detained without bail, faces charges of first- and second-degree murder, and first- and second-degree assault, among others. A search of his room uncovered ammunition under his bed, and his cell phone contained images of him holding a firearm.

The shooting led to an immediate lockdown of Joppatowne High School, with students and staff adhering to emergency procedures. Parents were informed about the incident and given instructions regarding reuniting with their children.

Following the tragic event, Maryland Governor Wes Moore released a statement, conveying condolences and addressing the issue of school safety. Moore, along with the First Lady, expressed deep sorrow for the Joppatowne community and recognized the premature loss of life. The Governor affirmed that the entire state of Maryland was thinking of Warren Curtis Grant, his family, friends, teachers, mentors, and other loved ones.

Moore also praised the immediate response of local police, Maryland State Police, first responders, and school staff. He highlighted his administration’s commitment to supporting families, community leaders, and local law enforcement in their ongoing efforts to improve school and community safety.

This incident has reignited debates about school security and preventing gun violence in schools. Many community members are advocating for enhanced safety measures and stricter gun control laws to avert similar future tragedies.

Joppatowne High School closed from September 9 to September 11, 2024. During this period, the district offered support services for students in the Joppatowne community, including counseling professionals and meal programs.
